Positive examples of Islam in the real world...?

I am trying to stay as open minded as possible, and I have long held a policy of basing my views on a religion based on said religion’s teachings. The problem is, that every day there is another news post about angry Muslims threatening to kill people over a comic strip, condemning the rest of the world for not BEING Muslims, justifying killing civilians, etc. For the longest time, I’ve been telling myself it’s just the stupid media focusing on the negative. They certainly do that with Christians, ignoring all the good they do and only reporting when some priest touches a little kid. So I’m willing to accept that all I’m seeing is the ugly side of Islam. But I realized today that while I have known a number of Muslims, I have not yet had a single good personal experience with one. Nor have I ever read about one. Literally, not one. I realize that’s not to say there’s not thousands of examples out there; it’s just that I haven’t ever seen one. So here’s my challenge: I want to see the other side. I want to see Muslim charities, specifically ones that help non-Muslims as well as Muslims. I want to see out-reach programs. I want to retain a sense of open-mindedness, but I need SOMETHING I can put in the positive column. Help me out.

Update:

Maysa: THANK YOU! That’s what I need to see! Just signs so that when I think about the positives of Islam, I can say SOMETHING other than “well…I’m sure there are some positives.” You’ll likely get the points, but I’m gonna keep the question open in the hopes of seeing more HELPFUL posts like yours.

The rest of you: 1. I am TRYING to educate myself. That’s why I’m asking. I don’t have the time, interest or money to take a class on the subject. 2. I’m looking for links on modern examples of Muslim good will, not random factoids on Islamic history with no other listed sources but your own word. Any comments, be they positive or negative, will be ignored if not backed up by a reasonably reliable source.

I am quite impressed by your question and I am pleased to know that there are at least some individuals out there who still believe that Muslims have an ounce of sincerity and love within themselves. Thank you for posting such a beautiful question-you made my day.

Here are several links which I find quite inspiring:

I don't really do research on Muslim charities, because I don't need to see things to believe that someone from a religion can be good.

Moreover, except the Middle East, most muslim countries are the ones in need of aid, they don't have the money to do charity on an international level. You should watch Al-Jazeera, you'll get actual information on the Islamic world there. They reported on a Muslim aid organisation once, which BBC and CNN all refused to broadcast.

I can give you an example of a muslim state though. I live in one, where there is about a 2% minority of Christians, Hindus, Jains, Buddhists, and other religions. Everything from Eid to Buddha Purnima gets a national holiday here, and the constitution, aids, healthcare, taxes, is all equal for everyone. Absolutely no bias. Of course, fundies emerge now and then, but its not only from the Muslim side, and the govt always manages to take care of it.

Edit: if your going to ignore posiitive comments just because there are no sources or links provided, maybe you should do your own research, instead of asking people on an answers forum.

Brother you may want to look into this yourself and not base your views from what these ignorant people proclaim. Although here are some examples- The deputy foreign minister of Iraq is a Christian. Saddam Hussein donated $1 million to help build a Christian church in the United States. There are thousands of charities just search google. Besides all this Muslims comprise of 40 percent of the engineering industry in the US and 37 percent of the Medical Industry. We also make more money then the average American and our intelligence in America is the highest out of any group, well above Chinese. Allah Akbar

They've never read either book so they have zero to back up with factual information. The Bible ("the good book") teaches to "turn the other check". The Qur'an teaches to murder people of other faiths. And is a fake rewrite of the bible. Most Americans are Christians and that includes Democrats. So this question is actually moot. America is mostly a Christian nation. Or at least people pretend to be. So theres your answer.

<edit> @poƃ ou sǝɹǝɥʇ sıɥʇ pɐǝɹ uɐɔ n ɟı - Saudi Arabia also prescribes the death penalty for gays and "adulterous women" (a definition they apply very flexibly), refuses to recognize any other religion besides the three Abrahamic ones, two of which are illegal (guess which ones) and has one of the worst records for human rights in the world for women and non-Muslims, and is notorious for supporting terrorist groups.

So glad that their superior universal health care is availible for Muslim men, though. Bravo for them.

Islam is more like a cult. The rewards exist only in being a Muslim, and there are no spiritual benefits to anyone else. Instead of "love thy neighbor", or "turn the other cheek", Islam teaches one to kill non-Muslims or make slaves of them, and to conquer their land. There is nothing spiritual about it. Oh, I thought you asked for negative examples. Nevermind.

Why should i feel that i need to prove there is good muslim out there? Obviously muslims are human beings and there always good and bad people. If you haven't met any good muslim, then i guess you haven't met many muslims then...

Saudi Arabia has universal health care due to their oil revenues. When that dries up, it's back to the huts.
