Mechanics: Please Help! My 97 Grand Prix GT keeps dying. Could it be an O2 sensor?

It dies when I let off the throttle coming to a stop or slowing way down to turn in forward and reverse. It starts up again fine. Someone I talked to thought it might be an O2 sensor. Could that be right? And if it is should I replace the front or the rear sensor first? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Update:

My Check Engine light is NOT on. It was on when we got the car but has been off for a long time. (Light was off when this problem started happening.)

    No... Not an O2 sensor...

    Sounds more like

    1. Throttle position sensor or

    2. Idle control motor...

  • the o2 sensor will trigger a light in most cases, and it is only there to trim fuel ratios. if you are insisting on replacing the at sensor. let me define the purpose and let you make an educated decision. there should be three on each manifold really or a total of 4. the first one closest to the head is responsible for fuel trim on that bank. the second one is to tell the computer how rich the mixture is going into the cat, and the one after that is telling the computer how well the cat has cleaned up that mixture.

i really doubt that it is the o2 sensor without that light coming on.

    b1s1 bank one sensor one

    b1s2 bank one sensor two

b2 2 bank two sensor two

well you get the idea right?

O2 sensors are only trim devices and will not cause an engine to stall. You need to get the problem properly diagnosed as it could be a million things.

Trying this or that and only guessing will end up costing you more than going to a mechanic

If it is your O2 your engine light would have had to be one for ever before they go that bad. Go to the part store and get that check for free. They will be able to tell you what it is and which one. You need a special tool for the O2 maybe you can use theirs if they have lone a tool at that store. Good Luck

I know that this will sound crazy and the guys will probably laugh and blow it off, but take off your gas cap, start the car and let it run a few minutes, turn the car off and replace the gas cap. Sometimes the car can vapor lock if you don't put the cap on right. And the best two parts of this diagnostic, it takes less than 3 minutes and it is FREE. No harm, no foul if that wasn't it.

Doesn't sound like an O2 sensor to me, I'd get it to a real shop and have a professional check it out. Whatever you do, dont go to autozone. They are not pros in diag.

Is your check engine light on? Assuming it is, go to autozone and have your codes read out. From there, you need to have someone figure out what's wrong. It's not always obvious from the codes, but it's where you need to start.

The belt pulleys are possibly out of alignment. initiate with the tensioner and then stick to the path of the belt from pulley to pulley. i'm going to wager you come across one that's no longer in alignment with the others.
