    Only 31 as South Africa is the host, and have automatic qualification.

    32 teams will feature at the 2010 FIFA World Cup finals in SOUTH AFRICA. the host nation, SOUTH AFRICA qualify automatically while the other 31 teams qualify through their respective confederations. the allocation of places in the final tournament are as follows:

    Europe (UEFA): 13 teams

    - 53 teams were drawn into 9 qualifying groups (8 groups of 6 teams each plus 1 group of 5 teams) & each team in the same group plays each other home & away.

    - the group winners (9 teams) qualified automatically to the finals.

    - the 8 best group runners-up will be drawn against each other in a two legged play-off & the play-off winners (4 teams) will also qualify for the finals.

    Africa (CAF): 5 teams (+ SOUTH AFRICA qualified automatically as host nation for a total of 6 teams)

    - the remaining 20 teams enters the 3rd stage of the qualifying round & they have been drawn into 5 groups of 4 teams each. each team in the same group plays each other home & away.

    - the group winners (5 teams) qualify for the finals along with SOUTH AFRICA who qualified automatically as the host nation.

    South America (CONMEBOL): 4 or 5 teams

    - 10 South American (except GUYANA & SURINAME) teams plays in a single qualifying group & each team plays each other home & away. the qualifying matches was started back in September 2007.

    - the top 4 teams from South America qualify automatically to the finals.

    - the 5th place team enters the two legged intercontinential play-offs against the 4th place teams from CONCACAF zone. the winner of the intercontinential play-off will also qualify for the finals.

    Asia (AFC): 4 or 5 teams

    - the remaining 10 teams enters the 4th round of the qualifiers & they were drawn into 2 groups of 5 teams each. each team in the same group plays each other home & away.

    - the top 2 teams from each group (4 teams) qualify automatically to the finals)

    - the 3rd place teams from each group will square-off against each other in a two legged play-off & the winner of this play-off will then move on to play in the intercontinential play-off against the winner of the Oceania (OFC) zone which was won by NEW ZEALAND. the winner of the intercontinential play-off will also qualify for the finals.

    North, Central American and Caribbean (CONCACAF): 3 or 4 teams

    - the remaining 6 teams enters the 4th round of the qualifiers & each teams in the group plays each other home & away.

    - the top 3 teams qualified automatically to the finals.

    - the 4th place team will square-off against the 5th place team from South American (CONMEBOL) zone in a two legged intercontinental play-off & the winner of the intercontinential play-off will also qualify for the finals.

    Oceania (OFC): 0 or 1 team

    - the Oceania zone qualifiers was won by NEW ZEALAND back in November 2008 & they have qualified to play against the 5th place team from Asia (AFC) in the two legged intercontinental play-off scheduled for November 2009. the winner of the intercontinental play-off qualify for the finals.
