Can fish be shy? ...?

I've got my first fish in nearly 10 years. The first time I had a very social beta fish. Now I have 3. Two are little feeder fish and one is an algae eater. He's not bashful but doesn't really care about people. The two little feeder fish though are fairly shy. The larger one in particular. She hates having the lights on and refuses to come out when they are on. She also doesn't seem to like me. If I come in the room she goes under her little bridge.

There are 3 of them in the 46 gallon tank. 2 are about an inch. The very shy one is maybe 2 inches. They've got some rocks to hide in, a bridge and a bunch of the fake plants.

So. Can fish be shy? Is there anything to do to make them feel more comfortable? I'm feeling like a bad fish mom here.

Sit next to your tank.... don't hover over the fish tank.... give them some space.... gently tap on the glass to let them know that you're there.... put a little food in and they will respond to you.... Fish are frightened more than shy..... it takes time..... good luck with your fish

Yes, fish can be 'shy' but is more likely scared. Fish in pet shops tend not to be shy because of all the people.... they get used to it. Have you ever noticed if you put your hand above a tank in a pet shop the fish will come to it. It's because they know a hand=food. You fish might not like the bright lights because it means any non existent predators can see it better. We had a clown fish that was shy but only because the other fish thought my presence meant they would get food and would chase him off when i got into the room. That made him hide if he saw me.
