Other authors similar to J.D.Salinger?
I loved The Catcher in The Rye and I finally read and enjoyed Franny and Zooey last night. I am VERY particular about the fiction I read (I don't do chick lit or Danielle Steele!) so I need some good recommendations of other books I might like that are similar to his style.
Thanks!

First, you should continue on and read Salinger's Nine Stories, which is a volume I've re-read I don't know how many times, and his Raise High The Roofbeam, Carpenters. The only drawback to reading Salinger is that he's so good that when you finish his four published works you're left wanting more and there is no more.
I found some of Kurt Vonnegut's works to be excellent - the less Sci-fi pieces: Galapagos, Bluebeard, Slaughterhouse-Five, Deadeye Dick, Hocus Pocus, Mother Night.
Heller's Catch-22 is worth reading, very funny.
Tom Robbins - Jitterbug Perfume and Another Roadside Attraction.
Enjoy..........

I have huge admiration for Salinger's writing skill. Be sure to read his short story collection 'For Esme: with love and Squalor' and the two mini-novels 'Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters/ Seymour: an Introduction'. These are both excellent too.
I think I have similar reading habits to you - I am extremely picky with what I will read. I generally read a novel not for the plot, but for the narrative style and uniqueness of the author. Salinger is a truly original writer, but I don't see why you wouldn't love Joseph Heller (Catch-22) or Hunter S. Thompson's work (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas).
