Cozumel is a great place to visit. Chankanab is a tourist spot where you or your entire family can snorkel, a kind of underwater park to spend the day. Several of the hotels on the west side of the island have their own private snorkeling place...I was in one a Fiesta hotel and you just jumped off the dock and there you were surrounded by sea urchins, coral, and fish.

There are also guided tours to take you out into the reef where you will see bigger fish....

Don't miss the "downtown" area of Cozumel which has good restaurants and shopping, and by all means take the water taxi over to Playa del Carmen which is on the mainland of Mexico....gives you great views, is a fun trip, costs not so much, and only takes about 45 minutes..

also Cozumel is a small enough place to take the taxi...they don't overcharge you and it's better than the long walking...it saves on pollution and helps their economy too.

I have been to Cozumel twice and Calica once. Both times in Cozumel I went snorkeling. DO NOT SETTLE FOR THE PRICE THEY SAY. Everytime I have went and everything I have bought in Mexico I haggled to get the price lower. The worst thing they could say is no and come back with a counter-offer, then come down on that price and they may counter-offer again but you get it for a cheaper price than what they originally asked. Both times I found snorkeling trips without the cruise ships help because they over charge. The first time I went they asked $45 for 3 snorkeling sites. I got them down to $25, the second time they asked for $40 and I got them to $22/person. You can always get them down on their prices. Also, be careful, if you second guess whether they look safe or not, find another guide!

Also, you can go on your own if you have the gear to do so, but you wont be able to go out as far and see as much coral and fish.

    Happy snorkeling!

somebody's stated Eden Rock and in case you care to stroll a mile or so extra alongside the line you will get to attractive little Smith Cove. this is a robust theory to get some squeezy cheese to entice the fishes to you -- they're going to come swarming around in case you squirt it (or although in the event that they purely spot the canister!) nonetheless, you may take a close by bus (it is going to hoot at you to get on) and return and forth up the size of 7 Mile coastline and attempt snorkelling there. there grew to become right into a marked alleviation interior the richness of sea existence following the advent of the cruise ships, so i might recommend getting far off from the place the ships are docked.
