Did my budgie die of old age?
My budgie, Tweety Bird, died tonight. I know silly name but the wife named him so it is. But he has been sleeping a lot more than usual the last few weeks. He eats fine. We hand feed him seeds and millet on a regular basis. Plus he eats his regular food. This morning he was sitting in the bottom of the cage sleeping. I thought he might be dying but this after noon he was perky and eating as usual. Then tonight he died. He is eight years old. He also just recently was separated from his birdie buddie, Oscar, a love bird. We got Oscar a mate. But they have been in the same cage until tonight. Any ideas out there?

There's usually a reason a budgie dies. I don't know of many budgies, or other pet birds, that die of old age. Your Tweety Bird had some kind of illness. I can't say for sure what it was because the symptoms you mentioned fit a wide range of illnesses. Budgies are excellent at hiding their illness until its too late to do anything. Many budgies die suddenly and their owner has no idea of the cause of death. These budgies often eat and behave like they are healthy. You'd have to get an avian vet to do a necropsy to find out the exact cause of death. It sounds like your budgie was already ill, and with the extra stress of being separated from Oscar, might have caused Tweety Bird to die. I'm sorry to hear about your budgie's death.

Usully 8 years if a life expectancy for a seed based diet only bird. Usually if you only feed seed that live 8-10 years..... I doubt it but they are also to have nuts and fruits and veggies seed and pellets...
he lived a good life

I can't say for sure what he died from, but 8 yrs old is a ripe age for a budgie.
They are rather delicate and can get sick from simple drafts (as I'm sure you are aware of). It sounds like you took very good care of him and that he most likley passed from an age-related problem. As much as his loss stings, you should feel confident that he had a long, happy life.

So sorry about your loss.
He did not die of old age but without a necropsy there is no way of knowing. Perhaps he died of a broken heart.
