Why do all of Pittsburgh's sports team wear black/gold?

I just became aware that the Pirates, Steelers and the Penguins all have black and gold as their team colors. Assuming that they have different owners, why would they all have the same colors? Do the colors black/gold have a symbolic significance? Are they the official city colors or is it just a mystery?

The city is black and gold. Its sorta like uniting everything in an aspect. I've been to a Pirate game where people will have Penguin shirts on and be supporting the penguins at the same time since they'd be playing or something like that. The police cars are black and gold, the flag is, everything is basically. And it sure makes sport team days easy when it just has to be "Black and Gold Day". I actually prefer it this way instead of different colors.

You Idiot: Pittsburgh actually isn't as dirty as it has been in the past. It's cleaning up well.

Pittsburgh is truely a unique City, and FYI, it's not dirty at all. In fact, they rank 29th of all metro citys in the country as the most livable city. But back to the issue at hand, Pittsburgh Fans and sports teams have special "togetherness" about them. Steelers go to the Pens games, and back in the day, the Pirates would cheer on the Steelers, and vice versa. But truely, the Pens have some blue in them, and the Pirates have some red in them. Panthers are not professional, so they don't count. The important thing to note is the "Gold".... the Golden Triangle so forth.... Every team representing Pittsburgh is Gold. And there were truely some Golden Years for All of our sports teams, which is more than most cities can say. Pittsburgh is under classed when it comes to money, and they pride themselves when their sports teams do well.

The city has a colors. Black and Gold. This sort of thing is more common in Europe, at least that's what I heard, dating back to when there were City-States, and the city literally was a nation, and had it's city -flag with city colors. Perhaps this tradition was brought over with European imigrants to Pittsburgh.

But, the original colors of the Penguins was blue and white, they changed in the 70s to conform with the rest of the city.

The Steelers have used black and gold as their colors since the club's inception, the lone exception being the 1943 season when they merged with the Philadelphia Eagles and formed the "Steagles"; the team's colors at that time were green and white as a result of wearing Eagles uniforms. Originally, the team wore solid gold-colored helmets and black jerseys. Unique to Pittsburgh, the Steelers' black and gold colors are now shared by all major professional teams in the city, including the Pittsburgh Pirates in baseball and the Pittsburgh Penguins in hockey. These also are the colors of the city's official flag.

I'm not sure why they've done that. I know the Penguins used to be Blue and red until they changed to look like the rest of Pittsburgh. They still wear their blue jerseys sometimes. It's definitely not because it's a dirty city. It's actually quite clean compared to St. Louis and Chicago. Just because we build factories and make progress in life by building new things rather then sit around and do nothing doesn't make us dirty. Well, now i'm done except for one more thing... GO PENS!!!

hahahaha, my sister and I were talking in the car about this yesterday!!

It is weird, but true that they have the same colors.

It is weird because it is like the sports in Pittsburgh all look the same and have no significance. I wish they had all different colors, so it would separate the sports. it is like all Pittsburgh fans come to pens games in their Steelers shirts. They say that they have the same colors and think they are all cool, haha. It looks funny, because it looks like they got their sports mixed up! muhahahhahahaha.

Black and Gold are the colors of the city of Pittsburgh. The police cars are white, black and gold too. And the city flag.

I think it is cool. I've always wished each city did this.

Boston has almost the whole rainbow cover (Bruins -black and gold, Patriots-red, white, and blue, Celtics- green, Red Sox- red and sometimes black.
