foal - a male or female horse under 4 years of age

filly - female horse under 3 yrs of age

colt - male horse under 3 yrs of age (only if he is not fixed, once hes fixed no matter what age he is he is considered a gelding)

gelding - male horse of any age that is fixed (not able to reproduce)

mare - female horse over 3 yrs of age

stallion - male horse still in tact (not fixed)

yearling - a horse that is approx. 1 year old

weanling - a horse that has just been weaned from it's mother (separated)

    dam - a horse's mother

    sire - a horse's father

    green - an untrained horse

out of - a term meaning "mothered by"

by - a term meaning "fathered by"

ex ; this horse is out of that gray mare by that brown stallion

that's about all I can think of at the moment.

Filly is a female foal and will stay a filly up until they are a 3yo. at which time they become a mare. Same with a colt which is a male foal up until they are 3 at which time they are considered a stallion and once they are bred they are a stud. A gelding is a stallion who has been altered.

A yearling is just that a horse either filly or colt who is a year old. Weanling is a foal who has been weaned from their dam up til the point they become a yearling. A suckling is just that a foal who is still nursing.

Dam is the mare a foal is OUT OF and a sire is the stud a foal IS BY. Dams have produce of dam and stallions have get of sire.

    a filly is a young/baby girl horse, a colt is a young/baby boy. A foal is a baby horse.

    Stallions are adult male horses.

Geldings are male horses that have had their "manly duty parts" -for lack of better words.

A mare is a female horse.

Green horses are horses still being trained.

Yearlings are horses in their first few years of life - used alot in horse racing.
