100mb and 1000mb on the same network?

We have a 10/100/1000 unmanaged switch. Some of our client computers have gigabit network cards the rest only have 100mb cards. All the network cables are CAT6. Can you mix the two connection speeds on the same network? All the client computers are connected to the same switch and the domain controller has a gigabit network card.

Yes, you can mix them. Most likely the NICs are set to "auto-negotiate" their speeds, which means they will talk to the switch and determine for themselves the best speed to run. Different speeds will not cause any trouble.

sure you can, the cards that can do gigabit will run at that speed and the 100 Mbps card will run just fine at that speed right along side...

you may notice the port status lights on the switch blinking different colors, and that is an indication of which ports are running at which speeds...

over time as you repair and replace the slowed machines your over system speed will improve, but, for the time being there is nothing to keep you from mixing and matching now.
