Having problems installing new RAM!?
Hello folks.
Having problems installing new RAM.
I have a Dell 531s which originally had 2 512 cards of ddr2 pc-5300 RAM in it.
I bought two sticks of DDR2 pc 5300 that were 1gb each. My computer will not boot with these sticks in.
What is the problem?
They are compatible, and it boots when I replace the old ram, but any time any of the new ram is in it will just leave a blank screen when the system powers on.
Any help?
Thanks
Thanks for the tips.
Neither stick is recognized. They are securely fastened and seated because there are no beep or anything. The system is running, but a blank screen is all to be seen.

I recently did the same thing. Be sure the sticks are properly secured. Test one stick at a time if need to in order to see if one is bad but one is still good. When RAM works properly and is installed correctly your computer will recognize it when it boots up. If both sticks don't work return ur RAM get more and try again :) Hope this helps! :)

I can think of 3 reasons this may occur.
Reason 1: If you didn't buy the same exact memory speed or voltage this may be why its not working. Check the packaging for the memory and see what the ram speed and voltage is. If they differ return one for a match to the other one. This should only be an issue if you bought both sticks if single stick packaging. If both came in the same package you can skip this reason.
Reason 2: One of the new sticks of ram may be bad. Try booting your computer with 1 stick, shutting down, then trying the other stick. Only use 1 at a time and see if one works and the other doesn't. If one doesn't work then you have a bad stick and should return it of if they came in a 2 pack you'll have to return both.
Reason 3: Your BIOS may need to be adjusted so it works with new ram. Sometimes when switching from 1 voltage of ram to another you have to manually adjust the voltage in your computer's BIOS. To do this you put in a stick of your old ram, enter BIOS, then adjust your ram voltage in accordance with the packaging on your new ram. Shut down, install new ram, boot up.
Hope this helps!

Sounds like you bought some bad ram. Try one then try the other see if either of them work. The return the bad one.

Also, it sounds like to me you got two bad sticks of RAM, most of the time, you can take it back from where you got it and tell them that it is defective and most of the time they will switch it out for you, good luck!

you likely did no longer do something incorrect. on occasion whilst memory is mixed with categories/manufacturers of memory it does not consistently play helpful. it may be that the hot and previous memory do basically no longer paintings jointly, wherein case your going to could desire to get greater of the hot stuff and ditch the previous completely or stick to the previous stuff. the different risk is that the hot memory is defective. this could take place, and it does in some cases. i've got faith that xp has a memory diagnostic gadget which you will run. seek for some thing probably referred to as "homestead windows memory Diagnostic gadget" or some thing comparable. it is going to wish to run the subsequent time you reboot your laptop. in case you run this and it unearths blunders with the memory, you may likely return it because of the fact which potential it somewhat is incorrect.
