Hard drive running out of space: Looking for alternative storage?

I filled my 360 gb HD is little more than one year, and a 80GB portable hard-drive in the next 4-5 months. Most of the data came through torrents. I do NOT want to delete most of them.

Clearly, I need to buy additional storage. But this time I am looking for a cheaper and more permanent storage medium. The portable drive was expensive as a storage.

With your experience, can you please guide me here; what would you like to go for?

Buy a full-size external hard drive instead of a little portable one. You can buy huge amounts of storage for reasonable prices when you look a the full-size hard drives.

I've always found the so-called "portable" ones to be a rip-off, but that's just me.

I made my own portable 80GB drive for about $40 and only use that to shuttle important things back and forth to computers and clients. I use my massive external drive for long-term storage.

    Good luck.

The best alternative is to go with an external hard drive and to run Windows "Disk Cleanup" on your computer to help free up some space.

Today it's cost-effective to have an external USB drives. You can also daisy chain them. You only need to decide if you need an IDE or SATA external case and drive.

You might want to look around for 'online storage' also. One company called A-Drive gives you up to 50 GIGs of free online storage. See source below.

Also, you might want to consider organizing your Torrent downloads. Make folders for specific types of programs so you can easily recall what is where.

For example, I place my downloads in a folder called c:\a as it's easy and fast to find. Then I break up my downloads into folders like: /security, /browsers, /drivers, /games, etc.

Occasionally run Window's 'Disk Cleaner' program on all your drives as it helps clear up some space.

    Good luck!

If you are looking for a long term soultion then no doubt an External Hard Drive with a 1TB memory is a good choice but you can also store the stuff in DVD's as a short term solution.

You can get an external hard drive up to 2TB in size, however, the best bang for buck drives are those 1TB or less.

Newegg has a good variety of hard drives for sale and it's highly regarded as one of the best computer hardware online store by system builders.

You can buy 1TB internal hard drives for as low as $75, and 1TB external hard drives for as low as $80.

like tom z said you can "install an external drive" or you can put your files on to a whole bunch of flash drives.
