In today's economy would you voluntarily change jobs?

I am in sales (advertising)--and am in a senior role with my current employer. I am settled in my area and have no plans to relocate.

I was invited to apply for a position with a company that my former Director works for. The position is in management. I have interviewed with several people within the company and am one of 2 final candidates.

I have one last meeting with the founder of the co next week.

I found out today that the other candidate is a referral of one of the VP's that I have also interviewed with.

So I am thinking LONG & HARD about the oppty--there would not be an oppty in my market(with my current employer) unless my boss left (I don't see that happening) and relocating is not an option.

I am somewhat at the "top of my game" and VERY interested in making the move into mgt and this could be the oppty to do so...but I want to make the right choice...

The current economic climate has me a little scared BUT I can't live in fear...I have no doubt that I would be re-hired if something didn't work out...

This is potentially a BIG move---I'll add that the salary is pretty in line with what I am currently making, however, the salary potential and anticipated growth of my market would be significantly more over the next 18-30 months...

Update:

I not "unhappy" at my current job--frustrated with some things---yes but that's not a major factor.

It's moreso stepping in to management --and being able to do something different without taking a paycut--while gaining a new talent/being able to add to my resume

Update 2:

Im not certian if a sabbatical would be an option. These 2 companies are in the same filed--somewhat competotors-not sure if that's an option/how it would be viewed.

If it were me and I was not happy with my current job and the new job was a sure thing with the same or better income/benefits, I would do it, especially if I would be rehired in the event that it didn't work out.

I would suggest that you ask for a sabbatical. This way you are still on the old emplyer's books with HR and will not need to start over with benefits, seniority, retirement plans, etc. if you should decide to return.

    Good Luck with your decision.

Source(s): My husband, a manager in business, had one of his employees resign amicably with visions of pursuing a different job. He tried to talk her into a sabbatical for the above reasons, but she did not see the need. 6 Months later, she asked to be rehired and since she did not heed his advice, she had to begin her paperwork all over again, including a new employee orientation, retirement, seniority and benefits.

Considering all of the people looking for work, if you feel that the new company is a good opportunity for you, the boss already knows your work. If it is a good opportunity, go for it. It may be the last opportunity for a while.

In the meantime, it opens up a job for another person at your current company, and ultimately in the domino effect of job openings, someone who needs a job and is out of work, will ultimately be offered a job.

So, not only are you doing something good for yourself, you are helping someone who is seeking a job to find a job.

  • Personally, I wouldn't leave. Until the current economy stabilizes, I'd stick with where I'm at.
