Leaving the scene of an accident?

If I get into an accident, and the guy who hit me tries to get away, am I allowed to follow him to get his plate info, or will I also be leaving the scene of the accident as well?

If you are going to do that make sure you have a witness, And get on your cell phone to the cops and explain whats going on. The police don't advise this because the follower has been known to get shot.

It's always a good thing to have a camera in your car, and if something happens, you immediately grab the camera and take photos of anything and everything -- license plates, people, damage, the road, intersection signs, etc. A "one use only" camera is worth its weight in gold. Don't give chase to someone -- that can be very dangerous to you! Just get the film developed and hand copies of all the photos to your insurance company and the police!

I would probably attempt to do the same thing without going to extremes and putting myself in harms way. If you see it's futile just stop and report the accident to the police immediately and inform them of your efforts and the circumstances, they aren't going to fault you for trying.
