Need a computer genius-Defrag issues.?

I have Windows XP, and I'm getting an error message when I try to defragment my hard drive (D drive). It reads as follows: " Disk defragmenter has detected that Chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume:Presario (C:). Please run Chkdsk /f. " When I try to Run this program, nothing happens. I really need to defrag, any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Update:

Phil, I didn't add the C prompt in the Run menu. When I did that, it brought up the list of file folders. Some I recognize, others I couldn't begin to comprehend.

How are you trying to run check disk? You should click on start, click on run, then type in "C: chkdsk /f" (without the quotations of course). Is that what you did? If not try it. If you did then come back with additional information.

Did you go to command prompt, Type chkdsk/f and REBOOT the computer?

If you have spyware doctor or something similar it might be preventing defrag from running ! Uninstall it !

    Reboot!

Then purchase Diskeeper, Set it and forget it. It's well worth the money.
