Yahoo Answers is shutting down on May 4th, 2021 (Eastern Time) and beginning April 20th, 2021 (Eastern Time) the Yahoo Answers website will be in read-only mode. There will be no changes to other Yahoo properties or services, or your Yahoo account. You can find more information about the Yahoo Answers shutdown and how to download your data on this help page.

How do you get special symbols, subscripts, etc. into an answer?

I have tried cut/paste from a couple of editors without luck.

I see that some answers have the correct format so it IS possible.

Gimme a hint, please.

Thanks in advance.

make a text file with the symbols in it, and copy-paste from there to the text box.

There are three ways (that I know of)

alt+number (press & hold down alt key then using numeric keypad type the number)

    alt+26 → "→"

    alt+227 → π

    alt+248 →°

    alt+251 → √

    alt+253 → ²

note that you'll get a different set if you use a four character code

    alt + 0177 ± but alt+177 ▒

cut and paste ¢. I have an app called charmap.exe on my PC. not sure if it came with vista or I imported it. I've used it for years. Look under programs accessories system tools. be sure to select and then copy in two steps...

using the following code types → &larr ; but without the space ←

larr of course stands for "left arrow"

try int, nabla, uarr, and part too. I'll send you the list if you send me your e-mail since the link I got them from is no longer working. I'm pretty sure you can get this info all over the Web however...

I now use a word document and keep all these on it.

charmap is too repetitive (too many fonts), but the others are not layed out very well.

Oh I forgot the &x; codes show up after encoding, so they won't appear until they are sent or something. For instance in Yahoo answers the code appears until you preview then the symbol appears.

I get them from Microsoft Word, under "insert".
