I use semi gloss or "satin" latex on all walls and gloss on woodwork. The semi gloss washes well but doesn't show every single imperfection in the walls like gloss does. If you get a good paint it will cover in a single coat. It is better to spend a few dollars more and not have to paint twice. I use only a full size roller and a brush. I have never been pleased with the small rollers.

Very rare for anyone to use silk on living rooms walls. Matt is the norm.
On the woodwork you need to ask in the shop or look on the tins. You can either undercoat then gloss or undercoat then satin. And yes, you do need undercoat the first time with satin.

It just personal choice.
Silk gives a sheen to the walls and marks can be wiped off easier, good if you have children in the house.
Matt is more of a dense colour with no sheen. I prefer to use matt.
You can use either on the ceiling.
Skirting boards look good painted with either gloss, or satin wood paint.

It will depend on what kind of paint you already have on the walls and how much work you're willing to do...if you have a glossy paint already on the walls, you can paint them with another glossy paint but if you want a different finish (matte or eggshell), you'll have to lightly sand the walls otherwise the new paint will peel or rub off.

You can use either colour depends what finish you want for your walls.I would use emulsion on the walls and gloss on the woodwork,if the woodwork is bear and has not been painted before, you have to prime it then undercoat then the finish coat.

It is entirely up to you. Silk emulsion you can wipe clean better. Matt emulsion you can give a light wipe but you may leave a shiny mark. I prefer silk emulsion.

i don't like the shine of silk paint when the light is on it...so i have matt walls.
as for wood...i like an eggshell finish which again, is not as shiney as gloss.
