Is Harry Kloor a Climate Scientist?
I've been hearing references to Harry Kloor in recent questions and answers as a scientist that does not believe in AGW. Kloor apparently received a doctorate in chemistry (for modelling phase transitions in magnetite) and physics (for not finding evidence for a purported fifth force). Since then, a search of Meteorological and Geoastrophysical Abstracts and Web of Knowledge seems to indicate that he has not published anything relevant to climate, or any work at all that didn't come out of his thesis research (but I might have missed some journal publications). He did apparently produce the "Swift Boat" ads, which would not add to his credibility as a scientist in any way.
Considering that his theses research were on subjects far from climate, he doesn't appear to have worked as a scientist since then, and he has worked producing propaganda, what makes him an authority on climate anyway?
For those that think my comment about Swift Boat ads has anything to do with my political beliefs, I would add that if he'd produced commercials for Moveon.org I would suggest the same thing--it shows that his recent work has been in propaganda (both the Swift boat ads and the moveon.org ads are examples of political propaganda) and not in science. If someone has an argument that producing political ads raises one's scientific stature, bring it on.
Thanks for your answer Starbuck. Perhaps you didn't claim to be Kloor, but you claimed to have a very similar background in another of your questions http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AhIwu...
If you're not Kloor then they must be giving out those double doctorates in chemistry and physical wholesale. From your bio (excuse me, Kloor's bio) it does sound like he's been out of the science business for quite a while. As for how difficult climate science is compared to other subjects, I can only say that perhaps if Kloor understood it better he wouldn't find it so easy. Also, as a Ph.D. candidate working on dual degrees in Physics and Climate science perhaps I do have a perspective on how difficult that might be.
Bad Moon Rising, I don't have the faintest idea what you're talking about when you say that I "deny the validity of your own Physics Degree by your statements." Please email me if you'd like to explain it.

This is great. No I never claimed to be Kloor. But here is his biography. He speaks around the country on the fallacy of global warming and was offered grants and refused........He is a writer, scientist, educator, researcher, inventor, story editor and producer, National Technology Policy Advisor, and a Chief Technology Officer with over 25 years experience in science & technology consulting, and commercial and military product development.[4][5][6][7] In his position of chief science consultant for Universal Consultants, a company he also co-founded, he has provided classified work for various think tanks, and Energy companies, and has also provided extensive guidance to clients in the development of new technological products, patents, and policy positions. These clients include NASA, the National Security Agency, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Rocket Plane, the US Senate, American Medical Association, Jet Propulsion Laboratories, Heavy Mental Interactive, Mousetrap Solutions, RealPlayer, and Next Computers.[4][5][7] He was also the chief science advisor for the X Prize Organization, advising X Prize Chairman and CEO Dr. Peter H. Diamandis on science and technology issues.[4][5][7] Dr. Kloor is also a credited writer, director and producer.[4][5][7] Since his graduation from Purdue University, he has written for Star Trek: Voyager and was the story editor for Gene Roddenberry's, Earth: Final Conflict.[4][5][7] In addition to pure entertainment projects, Dr. Kloor has leveraged government assets into the Entertainment Industry, creating TV/FILM projects with NASA, and ICE (Immigration Customs Enforcement Agency). [8][4][5] He is currently producer and writer of Quantum Quest: A Cassini Space Odyssey, a 3-D, computer-animated, action adventure, sci-fi program.[4][5][7][9].
You all might want to catch one of his lectures on GW. You might learn something. He is most undoubtedly the most brilliant person I have ever met and most who meet him will say the same thing. His work writing and developing movies should not be a problem with the liberal left as that is what Al God does also. You might not understand how hard it is to get a double PHD at the same time, then again maybe you do. Physics and chemistry are not easy subjects compared to climatology subjects which are mostly still in development as a total coursework. If I can be of any further assistance, please don't hesitate to ask.
Beren retort ...... rebuts Beren's answer already used to rebut his statements. Please note within the text the part about rejecting any scientist that disagrees with alarmists.
This craze, this fad will soon pass and people will forget about the debate in years to come. Just as they did many times before when these same people had another cause-celeb they were preaching. This one however is affecting the basic fabric of our country as the liberal media, politicians and their followers are on a mission to brainwash every man, women and child in the world on the greatest swindle of all time.
The only defense is knowledge, something these people do not have. They use references from other left wing blogs and internet sites to justify their positions, yet have no common sense or logic or scientific understanding themselves.
They reject all data, science, opinion that counteracts their agenda. They relate to a failed organization, the IPCC and others who are not a scientific organization, but rather a political entity. They use computer models, designed by man, thus flawed, all which are extremely inaccurate and yet discard the basis of historical and present fact on the earth's climate.
They reject any scientist who disagrees with them, they reject a scientist with only a masters degree, unless it is one of their own. They reject logic and they reject common sense and they reject the scientific process. They are the human engineers of the future and do not have your happiness in mind and would rather our planet go into an economic nightmare than to relinquish the thought that they are wrong.
Those of you who reject this course and ideology of the far left must fight with everything you have to protect this planet and its economy from those who desire to take it all away from you. You know who they are, especially on this blog.
The arrogance of these people are well known yet those of you who see right through them will be their downfall. They pray on the weak and timid and the less educated spewing what little knowledge they have to influence those who do not want to think for themselves. It is what is called a liberal, people who think of themselves as the master race I suppose and anyone else is nobody.
This is what I gleened from the 3 or 4 main alarmists on this blog. They are just out of school and who have been alarmingly brainwashed in their collegiate experience by others who want to continue this hoax.
Keep on fighting and let the truth me known, it is our only chance to save this country from those on the left who want to turn it into a socialist regime. As one on this sight proclaims that he rides a bike to work everyday. This is what these people want for you, to degenerate your lifestyle to theirs. We are Americans and must fight this leftist ideology as it is wrong and unfactual and designed to control you. It is not about science, this I know.
Dana retort.... Dr. Kloor studies the issue constantly and turned down grants due to the politics involved in the contracts and speaks at many functions on the fallacy of global warming. Dana you should attend one of these seminars, you may learn something. He calls this issue a scientific hoax. He has multi-interests and has the brain power to accomplish these interests, so what is your point about writing for movies?

I can recall being taught in Uni about climate change way back in the early 1970's and how the energy we were adding to the atmosphere from fossil fuels would accentuate any warming trend and mitigate any cooling trend. (I don't recall much talk of CO2). The difficulties arise from the anomalous properties of water and the energies involved in change of state such that there is an enormous inertia to overcome and how that inertia was what kept conditions sufficiently stable for life to develop as it has today. The thinking then (years before Gaia) was that the Earth would absorb an awful lot of anthropogenic warming before the system tipped into a new steady state with the likelihood being that deteriorating climate would effectively dismantle global civilization. Then politics and even showbiz got hold of Global Warming and turned it into a fashion fad and, as with all fashion fads, the public interest turned out to be short lived and the political interest both tricky and fickle. Can the frustrated scientists do anything about it? Of course, the very best Science comes from frustrated scientists. New funding will flood in once the Penny drops from it's present unfortunate bounce, but most likely not from the USA which can no longer even afford to build space shuttles. Geo-Engineering is likely to be tried now that reductions in energy use are unlikely given the nature of Globalisation. It might help short term, but the next cold cycle in the ongoing Ice Age is what will ultimately press the reset button causing mass migrations back down onto the Continental shelves. These cycles are far bigger than politics can cope with.

What I find humorous is that although Kloor may be brilliant, I don't think getting a double PhD is something that sets him apart from all the other scientists out there. Most schools would never allow somebody to get a double PhD simultaneously, no matter how brilliant they are.
I know the Ivy League school I went to would never allow it. I knew people there brilliant enough to have accomplished such a thing. The opportunity is just not there for most people.
It seems more like a publicity stunt more than anything else.
Edit: Starbuck, what are you retorting to? Your retort has nothing to do with my statement that most universities will not allow a double PhD. I said nothing about rejecting Dr. Kloor. It is no wonder you could not stop the formaldehyde legislation, you cannot even form a basic argument without going off on some unrelated political rant.

I personally don't care if the man picks the wings off of flies. If he understands the Physics of Climate change in a few key areas that either make or break the science, then that is all I care about! You deny the validity of your own Physics Degree by your statements and replace its relevance with the other aspects of your Cimatology Degree? Science is science you know that! If you are predicating your beliefs on opinion from anybody then you are simply relegating your resposibilities whether it be Kloor or Gore or the IPCC or the NAS. Show me the facts, not a persons "take" on the issue.

That was a cheap shot for the Swift Boat ads. By the way, I was in those adds with Doc sitting across from me. What you fail to realize or attempt to correlate is that at the time he produced the ads, he did not have a political opinion that he expressed to us or others. He was there to produce Internet Documentaries which he said he believed would be popular and part of the future of our learning. He did express a lack of education about the real Vietnam warriors and was impressed with the Swift Boat/POW men he met in Washington D.C. I spent a weekend with Doc and found him intelligent, sincere, apolitical, and driven to perfect his art (which at the time was being a Hollywood producer). I may be biased as he tried to hire me on the spot but I do not see why you called his credibility into question about two unrelated fields (climatology and film making). I can only guess you did that as your personal opinion which destroys any attempt at objectivity.

Nope. After getting his double PhD, Kloor decided to go into science fiction writing and producing.
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1004541/
And then produced the Swiftboat ads.

A search on Google Scholar reveals no scientific publications by Harry Kloor for about 15 years now.
http://scholar.google.com/scholar?q=harry+kloor&hl...
One of his final publications in '94 was apparently titled "Vulcans, terminators and science", signaling his transition into the realm of science fiction.
http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/1994Natur.368..112K
Which isn't surprising. As we know, the only science we can expect from the denial camp is the fictional kind. That's why they enjoy referencing Michael Crichton, after all.
I'll freely admit it's impressive to obtain 2 PhDs. Kloor is likely a smart guy. But being a smart guy doesn't make one a climate science expert. Neither does writing and producing science fiction. I don't care about Kloor's opinions on climate science any more than I do Gene Roddenberry's. The fact that deniers cite him reveals how slim their pickings are. The fact that Starbuck worships him so much is frankly very creepy.
Starbuck I have 2 words for you - psychological projection. You might as well be talking about yourself.

He once said the effects of AGW are being overstated. I think that's about it. Of course when Starbuck gets here he'll surely explain it, since he once claimed to be Kloor.
In answer to your question, that would be a "no".
I wouldn't mind seeing some of his work on the issue of AGW. Perhaps some data he has collected, or papers he has written. I can find none. Anybody have any links?

Well you sure showed your political stripes there. I would much rather trust a swift boater, than a poltical hack like John Kerry who clearly staged or at least exaggerated his purple hearts. As a former infantry sergeant, Kerry offends me. Where do democrats come up with these candidates. They find the worst of the worst.
I probably shouldn't assume your political beliefs simply because you accept Kerry's version of events. Personally, having not been there, I wouldn't characterize the swift boat veterans as propaganda and to be fair, Kerry wouldn't be the only one to get Purple Hearts for very minor "wounds."
