A rabies vaccine reaction?

We gave my sheltie a rabies vaccine about a month and a half ago. When we got up this morning, he had a big lump where the shot was given, about the size of a quarter, and it was also draining and sticky. It was a pinkish color, my thoughts are that it was blood and infection discharge. He's been acting like his normal puppy self. any thoughts on what might be going on?

Update:

*we did not actually give it to him, we brought him into the vet

Update 2:

we just got him home from the vet, they shaved part of his fur and did surgery on him to drain it, and he now has tubes to keep it draining. The vet confirmed that it is a reaction to his rabies vaccine, and it's only the 2nd or 3rd one he's seen in his 30+ years of practice. We also were given antibiotic pills and liquid to run thru his drain for the next 5 days.

thanks guys!

You should definitely contact the vet about his adverse reactions to the vaccine. They need to know about this reaction and what you can do for it.

Seems to be quite a long time for a vaccine reaction, I would have the vet look at it.

Add: So glad you got him to the vet and he's doing well. When the dog is vaccinated again, you will need to mention this reaction so steps can be made to prevent it in the future.

That's a really long time for your dog to suddenly have a reaction to a vaccination. I would call the vet and get it checked because there probably is another reason as to what is causing it.

Might be nothing, ut call your vet just in case. Never too sure about something. It might've been she was not normal to shots so she got a swollen bump, but call you vet. Some shots have side effects to other dogs.

    Hopes this helps!! :) :)

More likely to be something else, unrelated. A reaction wouldn't take that long. Insect bite is a possible cause. Pop back to the vets and get it checked out.

Thanks for the update info! It didn't seem possible that your dog reacted like that so long after the jab. Hope he recovers well.

There can be some side effects joint or muscle soreness, lethargy, or a mild fever can linger for a day or two. These reactions aren't serious, and your dog can eat, drink, and exercise normally after vaccination. Here's more info:
