Do you care about awards?

Do you care if a book has won an award?

Pulitzer, Man Booker, Newberry, Edgar, Rita, whatever.

Does it make a difference when you're picking a book to read for your own entertainment?

Yes. To me it makes a difference. I like to read books which have either won or been nominated for the Man Booker. It doesnt necessarily mean that I like the book, but I give it a shot. I use it as a criteria to pick up a book when confused. Nor does it mean that I restrict my reading to the Booker books - I read what I can get.

As a matter of fact, I have just bought Anita Desai's Fasting,Feasting. It was nominated for the Booker in 1999. That year JM Coetzee's Disgrace won, which I have alraedy read. The two books created a lot of stiff competition, so it will be interesting to note why.

For buying I usually do some research about the book on the net. If I like the theme or some other thing about the book, I buy it. Booker Prize books usually have the themes connected to the society and I like that in novels.

However I have never read any book which won any of the other prizes named above. But I plan to read Road by Cormac Carthy, just not because it won the Pulitzer, but also because I have heard a lot of praise about this one.

I never even look to see if a book I'm reading (or am going to read) has won any awards. In fact, I'm going to be honest, I don't even know what most of the awards in the realm of literature are. If I picked up a book that said it had an "Edgar" or "Rita" award, I would have no idea what that meant. Sure, I know what the Pulitzer and even the Newberry awards are, but I don't know too many others.

So, no, I don't care whether or not a book has won any awards. I think many great books are overlooked anyway.

    Best wishes!

Awards matter to me--a little. Pleasure reading is such a matter of personal taste that the number of choices can be overwhelming unless you limit yourself to just one or two genres.

Since I read all over the place, seeing an indication that a novel has won an award makes it more likely that I'll include it among those I'm considering. Somebody, or a group of somebodies, with qualifications to judge its quality found it superior, and that's worth something.

That said, I'll also note that I have a fifty-page rule. If a book hasn't drawn me in by the time I've read 50 pages, I feel no obligation to continue reading, no matter how amazing it's supposed to be or what honors it's received. I've abandoned a slew of highly-regarded books in recent years, donating them to ABVI-Goodwill for resale so others might enjoy them.

No awards, accolades and the opinions of reviewers aren't factored into my selection of reading material. I do go by word of mouth of my friends and reading club. At work each person brings in books they've finished reading and we circulate them. I'll go back and ask what the other readers have thought of certain titles. I don't do political thrillers but I love romance and now chick lit. Only two others read chick lit and very few read hard core romance. Only one other person reads paranormal/fantasy. Not a one of us reads real sci fi.

-- I trust them to help me because they are familiar with my tastes in books. An award doesn't say much to me except the author did their job well. Lots of people who don't get awards also do good work.

  • I honestly don't care, I've seen great books with and without awards. And I've seen terrible books with a ton of awards.

No, not really. Recommendations and reviews mean a lot more to me.

Obviously, I like to know that critics have enjoyed a book--but like I said, my friends' opinions and online reviews are much more meaningful for me.

No, not really. What stands out to me more is if it was on the New York Times Bestseller List.
