My Jeep Grand Cherokee Swap, Help!?
Alright, I have gotten much useful input from all my other posts on the subject.
I am switching out my 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 318 mopar.
I am wondering, before I do the swap and waste my time.
I have a 1997 360(5.9) Mopar Magnum I pulled.
I had some questions for a lot of people, but they chose not to let me e-mail them.
I called chrysler/dodge, and they were absolutely no help.
I am wondering will it bolt up with no fabrications/least amount of fabrications possible.
Alternater, exhaust manifold(I have 3" pipe.), Motor Mounts, transmission(auto) I have the new torque converter(I am told it would work for the 360.) any more input would be great!! Want to get it done soon. Thanks!

It probably wouldn't be worth the hassle. The transmission and everything else should bolt right up, but the electronics wont work correctly. Along with the ECM, you would probably need to replace the wiring harness, along with the motor mounts for sure. Also, the manufacturer recommends that the 5.9 should only run on premium gas, so take that into account as well. There have been MANY people on multiple forums that I am a member on that have considered the swap, but decided against it due to complications. However, since you have the engine (and if you have the complete harness), I'd try it! It'd be a shame to waste the 5.9, and it'd be awesome to see the swap acccomplished. Just be prepared to run into a few snags on the way.
As for the small details, 5.9's were only in the '98 model, and the weight of the 5.9 is not a significant amount more than the 5.2. Basically, it is a stroked 5.2, that's it. There's really no extra weight thrown into the engine, other than all those extra horses!

Yes you can swap but why? for all that time and money and to have the right ECM and worry if the TCM will communicate with the ECM and BCM along with the ABS if you have that and then when your check engine light comes on then what?
Me I would leave the 5.2 in or rebuild and blue print it if the engine is tired. Along with headers, 2.5 ( 3.0 may be to big depending on how your exhaust is built ) exhaust with high flow cat, and muffler, cold air intake, programmer, and punch your throttle body bores to 50 mm each. And you will match or exceed the 360's engine HP rating
I do have a copy of the 9th edition of the Mopar Performance manual from Chrysler engineers but a buddy is doing a 4.0L swap out with a 5.2L. I get it back next week
Me I am swapping my 318LA with a 93 5.2L magnum on my 82 Ramcharger

That's Crazy! Good Luck! Let us know how it turns out. Or we'll see a yahoo answers question... How do I get my BMW engine to work once it's installed in my Jeep Grand Cherokee? Anything is possible I guess...

The 5.9 only came in the grand cherokee for the 1998 model year. Having said that I would thhink that these few links will be your best help.....

Also http://burnsvilleoffroad.com/ this company specializes in swapping in anything from a 5.2 up to a massive 7.2L (440) hemi into jeeps. They mostly swap them into Wranglers but they have done a few ZJ's You might be able to contact them and ask for some info on parts needed etc. (will swap my 4.8L stroker for the 7.2L once I save enough money)

I would check out the 98 limited grand cherokee's with the 5.9 and see what they have. It might help... but then you've probably already done that. I just swapped a 4.0 with another 4.0 and it was easy. No thinking involved. Good luck.

I'm a 318 owner and wouldn't switch. 360s have a marginal HP increase (15) and much more weight.
Brian, the 5.2L guy and happy.

Don't guess through this and be sitting there with your Jeep in a million pieces and "oops, no worky"
These guys should know. I am not real familiar with Mopar bell-housing bolt patterns
