I completely agree with Mixter. It's gotta be Germany.

The country was split in two at the end of the war. In 1948, Berlin, which was still half-free (occupied by British, French, and American Troops) even though it lay deep in communist controlled East Germany, was blockaded by the Russians. Millions of free Germans were cut off from the west and denied food & water & other necessities in a Soviet bid to force the allies out. So the allies airlifted tons of supplies right over the blockade, and eventually the Soviet siege collapsed.

During the cold war, East Berlin and Germany were hotbeds of skullduggery. Lots of spy swaps on lonely bridges, tunnelling under the Berlin Wall. There was a huge tunnel dug by MI6 & CIA to tap Soviet/East German phone lines, but it was compromised right away by moles within British Intelligence.

And always there was the threat of war. And if the Soviets struck, the spear would be thrust first into Germany. Other Europeans might get a little breathing room/time to react, but not the Germans, and they had to live with that for 45 years.

That in turn put US and NATO bases all over West Germany, while East Germany was dotted with Soviet bases. The civilians had a love-hate relationship with the foreign troops; good for business, bad for morale--no one ever let the Germans forget how it all began: WWII.

By the way, if you ever want to see a great, great movie about East Berlin just before they built the wall, check out One, Two, Three.

Cuba would be a good one, the answer there is pretty obvious. Korea because it was literaly a communist-capitalist hot war within a cold war.

OTher counrtries. Hungry because of the attempted revolt in 1956 and subsequent invasion. Same goes with czechoslovakia in 1968. Poland because of pope john paul the 2 and Solidarity.

Japan, because it was turned into a democracy and given its sovereignty back quicker than had been planned because it was needed as a stable ally against china which became communist in 1949.

Germany would be a good choice two. Because the Cold War started where the Second World War ended on May8/9 1945, Berlin.

    Go with Vietnam.

For approximately fifteen years, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) fought against an American-supported Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam). The war for the U.S. ended in 1973 with the withdrawal of American combat troops, and two years later, South Vietnamese forces surrendered to the North.

I'd have to say Germany, It was split in two, and suffered through Blockades, airlifts and the Berlin Wall. For a long time it was the epicenter of the cold war.

edit; Cavin, I thought of Vietnam and Korea, but those were actually Hot wars.

Pick either Turkey (Struggle against interenal forces trying to turn Turkey communistic)

    or

    Greece ( Same Reason)

Also Korea / Vietnam would be good ones.
