1) I think the 57 game hitting streak would be more interesting, if only because of the day to day drama. Any day could be the end, and the excitement would be tons of fun.
2) The hitting streak would be the larger accomplishment in my mind, simply because no one has even come close to it in the modern era. I honestly don't even consider it a true record, because it happened before the modern era, back when hitting was easier (no relievers, the caliber of pitching was horrendous, etc.). I consider Rose's 44 game streak the true record, and even that one hasn't really been threatened in modern times.
3) I think we'll see someone hit .400 first, and maybe even this year. I really like Mauer's chances this year.

Both are interesting since they were both done in the same season (1941 I believe). No one will ever break the 57 game hitting streak. A few people have come close to hitting 400 since Ted Williams (George Brett hit 390, Carew hit 388, Gwynn hit 394) but no one has come close to 57 game streak. And there is no way a catcher will ever hit 400 this season or any season, they get too beat up throughout the year to maintain that level of excellence.
And the main reason the 57 game hitting streak is the most amazing and unbeatable hitting record ever is that it was accomplished by a Yankee.
ANd whoever said Joe D was lucky to hit in 57 games is a moron and doesnt deserve to live.

I wold say a 57 game hitting streak would be much more interesting. Does anybody remember the kind of press that Luis Castillo got during his hitting streak with the Marlins a few years back? I think it was only like 30 games straight; but still, they covering that streak even up here in New York. Let alone if anyone gets to 40 games it would be covered by the press entirely.
I wouldn't be able to tell you who could do it. Being a Yankee fan, I'd like to see Derek Jeter do it. He's had numerous hitting streaks over the years. I wouldn't be surprised.
And as for a .400 season, I really don't see it happening. Batters go into slumps all the time. To see a hitter nearly avoid it would be a major accomplishment; but, I just don't see it happening.

The 57 game streak would be more interesting because once it gets up to 40, we will have about 3 weeks of constant building excitement over it. It would be similar excitement if a guy like Mauer goes into September still close to .400, but not the same every day watch.
I actually think hitting .400 is more of a pure accomplishment. You have to be a great hitter to put a 57 game hitting streak together, but you would also have to have some fluke-like luck. To bat .400 you would have to be great from opening day to the end of the year.

I think that .400 would be more interesting, and more useful to the team, but a 57 game hitting streak would be more rare. I'm not great with math, but I've been told that the odds against hitting in 57 games in a row are astronomical. So we'll see a .400 season first.

57 game hit streak is more interesting because its the bigger achievement. We'll see joe hit over .400 this season

If we see either, hands down id say batting .400
For one reason, bullpen! Back in the day, Joe D would see the same pitcher at least 4 times in a game. So by the 4th AB, if he doesnt have a hit, hes already seen the stuff and could get one to extend the streak.
With middle relief and closers, if you dont get a hit off the starter, you may face a lights out closer, or a specialist out of the pen. If you are a lefty batter, and they bring in a lefty to face you, you can be out of luck. Then if you get another AB, it would be against the closer.
