What is in those 'freshness packets' that are found in some dog treats?

I am not sure what they are called, but I believe that they are in the packages for freshness.

My dachshund got into the garbage and ripped one up. I don't believe he ate any, but I just want to be safe.

Update:

What was in it looked like coffee grounds - dark brown, like soil.

Update 2:

Mustang - mischevious??? Tell me about it! The little stinker knocked over the garbage can and everything was everywhere! He is so lucky he is cute! ;)

Silica gel. It's to keep the food fresh. It won't hurt the dog.

The silica itself is not a problem, but it could have harmful additives.

Is there a website or a contact number for the company or the manufacturer of the packet?

Most companies are required to have an MSDS sheet on anything they sell that is hazardous. The sheet specifies the hazard, and how it should be treated.

Source(s): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silica_gel (we sell some hazardous matls, and have MSDS sheets)

Silica gel. It's very possessions, and if ingested by pet or person, they should be rushed to the ER immediately. If you dog had ingested it it could cause system failure, (organ failure) and at a fast rate too.

It could have been brown, because it's an absorbent also.

Don't know what's in them, but they usually say don't eat. Don't worry. Your pup probably didn't get enough to harm him. In the future just keep them up. Dachshunds are a mischievous lot. I have 2.
