Are Philosophy & Spirituality mutually exclusive?

I have seen many express the opinion that Philosophy & Spiritually are separate & have no intersecting point.

In your opinion, is this true or false?

If true, why?

If false, what is the intersecting point?

Please explain.

Thanks for answering.

Blessings to all!

Clearly common sense says no. There have been a very large amount of philosophers that have based their philosophies off of spirituality. Anyone who bases their life off of a religion is using a spiritual philosophy. In fact many philosophies use spirituality as their basis. I'm not saying that it is the intelligent path to follow. I'm just saying that those paths definitely exist.

Philosophy is an academic discipline, uses Reason as methodology and is thought based. Whereas, Spirituality is experience based, appeal to the heart more than head. However, they need not be contradictory, spirituality can be an applied philosophy and each can complement or support each other. After all head and heart is in the same person and often work in unison!

I think people who become knowledgeable enough to talk about philosophy have to have some base of spiritual knowledge. All of what we know and experience comes from a convergent source (or spirit, if you will) that drives us to do what we do.

Therefore, I would argue that they are not mutually exclusive, and that their intersection lies in balance or duality. With duality there are extremes, and the key is living those extremes in a balanced way. For it is in this balanced area, if you look hard enough, that we find enlightenment and inner peace.

    Blessings on your journey.

no to think about other faiths is part of philosophy, but spirituality is to believe in a universal energy beyond those faiths themselves. They do however, cross one another with their content. The knowledge gained through philosophy can create one to become more or less spiritual as time passes.

They are not mutually exclusive but rather complementary to each other.

You see, we have developed the habit of calling the complementary as opposite. For example, male and females are called opposite but actually they are complementary.

Philosophy is the science of expressing the mystery in words that can be argued and proven. Spirituality is the art of understanding the mystery from within by intuition.

Yet finally, both expresses the mystery by help of words or intuition

Only to those with a spirituality that they want to hold without being able to justify it. Everything requires philosophy. That's why the highest degree in most fields is a PhD (Doctorate of Philosophy)

Spirituality falls under the category of "metaphysics" in philosophy. Everything can be analyzed within the realm of philosophy. Although, I am not sure the same is true of spirituality.

Not only not exclusive, but necessarily inextricable from each other. The greater one's integration of his philosophy with reality, the greater one understands his metaphysical beliefs and his train of logic, the stronger will be his/her spirituality.

Spirituality is derived from "some estimate of himself and of the world around him—most particularly, of his capacity to deal with the world." Ayn Rand

The person most at peace with the world and him/herself is the one who can accept the things that cannot be changed and the courage to change what can or must be changed. This can't be done haphazardly without haphazard results, which in turn will affect the way one views one's own effectiveness as a human entity, which in turn will affect his/her spirituality.

it is true that philosophy & spiritually are separate

once the philosophy is developed & after one get through & get starting spiritual power feelings then philosophy converts to spiritual

and person goes on the path
