Why do people post or host movies?

There are now a number of websites around that post either movies or links to movies. Some of the links are to new movies, which I would imagine is illegal, at least in the USA. What motivates people to do this? Do they get paid in some way, is it a political statement, or what?

I was a member of a forum that had "uploaders", they would upload games, movies and TV shows to sites like Megaupload or RapidShare. They didn't get any money out of it, just a good reputation within the community. They'd get points called Karma or Rep.

If there is just a website that hosts movies they usually get money from subscribers or advertising.

It is illegal as it is sharing copyrighted material without permission. That said, with the price of cinema tickets today and the constant stream of unoriginal, uninspired, and just plain crap movies the big studios are releasing these days and the fact that alot of reviewers are either paid for good reviews or just lick popular filmmakers asses, I think it is only fair we have a chance to see just how bad (or, occasionally, good) a movie is before we spend so much on seeing it on the big screen.
