What are some ideas for avoiding drowsiness when driving?

When driving my 20 mile commute home, sometimes I find that I get very drowsy. I already use the air conditioner and listen to rock music, and am allergic to caffeine. Aside from the obvious (get enough sleep), what are some ideas for avoiding drowsiness when driving?

the sleep thing is they only fool proof solution. a 10 minute power nap right before your drive might help too.

i actually find the rhythm of rock music puts me to sleep. an orchestra classical keeps me awake because of the mathematical complexity my mind is working following it. just piano or violin music will put me out too.

This is kind of a question that is answered with simple common sense. Drinking a little too much alcohol disrupts a person's ability to perform simple and complex tasks, such as driving and even walking. Having a drink has never really harmed anyone and a person will not really be affected by just one drink. If an individual has maybe four or more drinks and then goes for a drive then we have problems. When I say "we" that's everybody in your immediate surroundings that are using the roads too. Driving a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol puts yourself and most importantly, other people at risk. If you ever meet someone who has actually driven drunk before and did not succeed in getting home, tell them that it could have been yourself out there that they could have hurt--or even a friend or family member of yours. To summarize why drinking and driving is bad, it's a selfish act that puts innocent people and yourself at risk of getting hurt or even killed.

Go to your doctor and ask him to prescribe you a stimulant like dexedrine.

Truck drivers have used dexedrine to stay awake during long road trips.
