Just how literally do christians take the bible?

For instance, "The Lord owns the cattle on a thousand hills" - does this mean if I were to stand on hill 1001 the cattle would not be the Lords?

"it is harder for a rich man to get into heaven than for a camel to fit through the eye of a needle" also seems figurative however it isn't. This one is literal. The eye of a needle is the side gate on a walled city designed for night access, so it means they need a bit of a prodding to go through which is quite evident.

Isn't it more logical to accept that some is figurative and some is literal and we have a mind to discern the difference?

When you read the Bible in context you will see the difference between what is intended by God to be taken literally and what should be taken as figurative language.

Of course, all of Christ's parables are figurative as are the Psalms. However there are some parts that are not meant to be taken metaphorically or figuratively and we need to use our minds to determine the difference.

It depends on which Christian you ask. Some believe in a rigid, absolute literal interpretation while others see parts of the Bible as metaphorical.

A lot of the New Testament has a lot of metaphors and similies. Those verses to me sounds like metaphors. But who knows maybe they are real.

By the way, us Christians take the Bible word for word, verse for verse, letter for letter.

You are correct. Some is literal and some is figurative and there are many Christians at both ends of the spectrum and everything in between when it comes to understanding this. Thanks for asking.

These are parables, this is what Jesus said..

"Therefore I speak to them in parables; because while seeing they do not see, and while hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand."

I take the bible literally when it is supposed to be taken literally.
