Does the 1st Amendment apply only to the government or does it apply to everyone?

I've heard that it only applies to government so does that mean that technically private citizens or organizations have the right to silence whomever they want granted its done in a manner that does not conflict with any other law?

Generally it applies to everyone. But everyone and then people in power abuse their position and play God and decide who's voice is heard and who's voice is silenced.
