Do I need to replace the heater core after head gasket failure?

My car made it to 227,000 miles and then the head gasket failed.

All of the radiator hoses, radiator, engine cooling channels and, I assume, the heater core are filled with oil and coolant.

I've got a replacement engine coming and am replacing the radiator and all of the hoses.

I'm fairly sure the heater core is also full of the oil/coolant mess.

Can I flush the core using a pump with detergent and hot water?

Or do I need to replace it with a new one?

No you don't have to change it, besides it is hard to change out the heater core, harder than changing out the motor it's self. In some cars you have to take out the entire dash-board to get to it because of the duct work for the ac and the heater it's self.

Just flush it out with water, don't use detergents soap in the system is just as bad as water in the oil, if you don't get it all out it will produce bubbles and added pressure in the system until it brakes down. Just use water and change the coolant a couple of times after the the system has been restored and ran for a while.

    Good luck....peace....
