I've found that the reliability of a semi auto shotgun depends more on the ammo than the gun itself. Sometimes lightening the springs helps but using good quality high brass shells is what makes a semi auto shotgun work flawlessly. If you want to shoot $7 a box bird loads get a pump. If you want a semi auto get ready to feed it the good stuff and only the good stuff. Oh and I hope you have deep pockets cause high brass ammo is expensive.

The best shotgun that is semi auto is a Benelli M1...the M2 is the updated version. Tom Knapp is a professional shooter for winchester ammo and benelli guns. He has a M1 that is in a museum that has shot over 485,000 rounds and only had less than 25 miss fires. He now shoots a M2.
If you cannot afford a M2, get a Remington 1100. They are around 700 bucks brand new. There a beautiful gun that looks 100% percent better than the benelli. Here are the two websites for the guns.
Source(s): personal experience. I have shot both and the 1100 performs better but the M2 is smoother action - How do you think about the answers? You can sign in to vote the answer.

You have some jokes as answers....the REM 1100/1187 is the best auto and best seller of all time. The Rem 1187 and 105 are the newer versions. Shot 20,000rds through a 1100 without a problem. Still looks and works like new. Can't find any wear.
Do I need to say more.
Source(s): There has been a lot of talk about Remington's first substantially new autoloading shotgun since their 1100, which was the most popular semi-auto ever released - Anonymous1 decade ago
Benelli Super Black Eagle, hands down.
Source(s): For once, I agree with Nitro. You did get a joke answer...from him. To throw out such a piddly number of rounds as proof after someone already gave a much higher number for a Benelli shows he's not paying attention. The reason Remington is more popular is because you can get 2 of them for the price of a Benelli. I have hunted with both, and while I'd trust either, if it came down to hunting ducks on the mud flats, I'd go Benelli. - 1 decade ago

In the market: Remington 11-87
Overall: Browning Auto 5, that is if you can find one in good condition. If you do, get it, it's worth every penny.
