lawnmower leaking oil?

My lawnmower is leaking oil. My husband (who has not maintained the mower) said a bunch of oil leaked out a while back. He thinks we should just toss the mower and buy a new one which we cannot afford to do. So today I drained the oil and put new oil in, changed the extremly filthy filter and changed out the spark plug. I cranked it up and after a minute it stated smoking (white smoke) It did this before I tried working on it. Now the fresh oil is leaking from the new filter. Any ideas to fix the problem would be appreciated. Thank you.

Let me start by asking a question. When you changed the oil did you tip the mower on it's side? How much oil did you put in the engine?

If you put too much oil into the engine it will be pushed out through the crankcase vent tube into the air filter area. This will cause the engine to smoke and oil to drip from the filter. If you tipped the mower on it's side you can get the same thing. Check the oil level in the crankcase and if it is over the full mark on the dipstick remove some. Don't overfill it. If the oil is from tipping the mower, clean out the excess oil from the airfilter area and it should clear up.

If the crankcase has been overfilled the oil would be pushed out for the duration of the vent tube into the air clear out field. it gets into the engine and what does not burn will come out the muffler. verify the point of oil interior the crankcase. it particularly is probably no longer above the entire mark. additionally verify your air clear out, if the paper clear out has oil on it, replace it. in case you tip the mower on it extremely is edge to bathe under it continually tip it with the air clear out up.

Sounds like the piston rings are worn out. If it is a push-mower, it will cost more to fix it than a new one !
