Simple homemade low frequency signal generator?

0-1000HZ? 12V 5 amp output.Anyone have a simple plan? I'm a mechanical guy-not electronics. Thanks!

    You can get a relatively accurate square wave at those frequencies by connecting a power darlington (pnp) transistor package across the supply and turning it on/off via a timer or microcontroller on the base pin.
