2003 VW Passat with 121,000 miles for 5400?

Does this sound like a good deal? It was 7000 about a month ago, they reduced the price. They wanted 5500, but they took off 100 and will replace the windshield (which has a tiny crack).

I have been reading reviews online and alot of people have said some horrible things about the Passat. Oil sludge problems that require a new engine, headlight problems, electrical and fuse problems and many others...

The only problem I noticed while test driving was that the door light stayed on even though all the doors were shut...

This car Kelley Blue Book's at 9,000. It seems that 5400 is really cheap... Its a really nice car but what should I do?

Update:

Ive imagined that I was buying say a 03 Honda Accord instead (even though I cant afford it) and have looked at reviews the same way...every single car has past customers extremely upset and disappointed.

Is there a car out there that the majority of customers are happy with? If so Id like to know about it.

BTW: I am currently driving an 88' Buick Century with no power steering, the front doors do not open from the inside, it overheats so I have to drive with the heater on, the back bumper is totally smashed, and it's paint isn't just peeling, it has been Sharpied and drawn on by many random people...ANYTHING is better then this!

Hey there! I am a VW owner and driver so my info is first hand and real.

What kind of service has the car had? was it taken care of? consistant oil changes etc?

From your note I would buy it, as it does sound like a good buy. Is it the vr6 or 1.8t? I personally like the 1.8t.

The big question to me would be was the timing belt changed at the 100k mark? important for the 1.8t as if it breaks the motor will be destroyed.

Sounds like a good buy to me if they changed the oil as expected and the timing belt is renewed. If the timing belt is not, subtract the cost of that from the sell price and buy it!

I love the heated seats in the GL's and GLX's...

Source(s): owner of many newer VW's and many older VW's. Would not be caught ever in a honda...ricegrinder.

    Try a Jetta or Golf/Rabbit.

    I drive a 06 Golf

My wife has a 05 Jetta

My son has a 08 Rabbit. These cars have proven to be 100% reliable and fun to drive!!

Several friends have a New Beetle. Two have Passats 03 and 06 models. The former has had major problems with his Passat (he admits to not servicing it). The 06 Passat owner is happy with his.

So with the one exception, I think VWs are great cars!

Would I buy the 03 Passat? Not unless I knew for certain that it was serviced as per VW maintenance schedule. Otherwise, you are asking for trouble....

IMO, get a Jetta or Golf.

Golden rule of buying used cars. Old in years, young in miles. At $5400 theres probably $1000 in there for the VW letters on the front also. Look around for cars with fewer miles and a couple years older. Theyll be cheaper and last longer.

I bought a 1999 VW with 119000 miles on it last year. I've only been able to drive it for probably three months out of that time. While they are nice looking cars they do need a lot of maintenance. I would say don't buy it unless you have the time and money to put into it. They are about triple in parts and the maintenance is higher... I wish i would have bought a different car!

don't by any VW with anything over 100K miles they are money pits when they get older. My cousin has had lots of problems with german cars I don't know why but he always buys VW but he has problems with every one down the line and he just gets a new one when the old one gives him problems. he trades them in like every 5 years.

Ya don't buy a volkswagon. I've had several. Nothing but trouble. Buy a Honda.
