How can i legally remove past roomates belongings?
I bought a home in february of 2008 in Roseville Michigan. My girlfriend and my 2 children were living at the home with me. we broke up and i let her stay at the house with my kids. in february of 2009 she told me that she couldnt make the mortgage payment anymore and that she was moving out. she also had her 2 cousins living in the home with her. i went to the courthouse and evicted everybody from my home and gave them until april 1, 2009 to vacate the property. they all did infact vacate the property except the 2 cousins left alot of their belongings in my basement. it is now july 2, 2009 and i would like to have my basement back. how do i legally get rid of their stuff?

when they where vacated they where suppose to take all of their belongings and i believe you gave them a reasonable time to come back for the things they left so you could throw it out if you want

They left their belongings, i didn't think it is illegal for you to throw it away if it was left behind with no intent to come back and get it. I suppose it would be similar to moving out of an apartment, i think they get a couple of weeks to claim it and then they just toss it all. Maybe call your property insurance provider, I'm still young so i'm not positive if it's different from apartments or not. I had some stuff i really would have liked from my old apartment when i moved. To my knowledge when you get evicted or move out they take your left over stuff and toss it. My mom said she had gotten evicted from an apartment before came home from work with her 2 kids and found all of her belongings in the trash.

You can follow steps to give him clear notice of a deadline to remove his stuff, after which it will be disposed of as garbage, send the notice by certified mail so you have a receipt to present to the court proving that he received a letter from you, etc., and at the end of the day he can still sue you. If you do all of that, I don't think he would win, but I won't be the judge.
If that doesnt work, run a new paper add stating the same thing 30 days for pickup...lot of people do this..

Give them 30 days notice, and then do what you have to do. If you want to be nice,90 days.
And make sure it's in writing.Send them a certified letter.
