Can you have heart problems at 18?

Yesterday i got home from cutting the lawn and went in my room to gather clothes to take a shower. And all of a sudden as i reached for my clothes i felt a sharp pain in my chest, the kind of pain you feel after you go running and inhale real deep. So i ignored it thinking it would pass, but it didn't. Before long, within 10 mins, i couldn't breath deeply without an even worse pain going down my chest and into my left arm. The pain eventually made its way up the left side of my neck. I couldn't walk with all the pain so i curled up into the corner of the couch for an hour and eventually took a st joseph baby aspirin. An hour after that it felt well enough to where i was able to walk and breath again. Then right after i went outside to watch the fireworks and the further i walked, the worse the pain. I woke up this morning feeling better but the pain is still present with enough physical movement. I'm 130 lbs, 20 lbs under weight, i eat healthy, and im a male. I wanted to go to the hospital last nite but my parents thought i was having a panic attack. This feeling was of pain, not of nerves, i know the difference and im still hurting when i inhale deep enough (it hurts like a burning pain in my neck, left side). Could it be a muscle related to the lungs or heart problems? I was told that you don't have nerves or feeling in your heart. My second guess would be fluid in my chest? Anyways, im going to the doctors monday to request an ekg but i wanted to know if anyone had any ideas of what it is before then?

Dont worry yourself by asking on here, go to the doctors ASAP. I've been going through similar problems and the only way you can get it sorted is by going to the doctors, not by looking out for suggestions about what it could be online, this will worry you more, and probably make the problem worse. I'm / was convinced my problem was heart related but they're constantly telling me it's stress / anxiety, I worried myself real bad by looking up stuff on the internet, please, go to the doctors.

Hi! I have anxiety and maybe I'm overgeneralizing, but it sounds a lot like that maybe the cause. I'm doing much better than I once was but I still feel that way, even on my meds. If I have a particularly stressful day, week, month my symptoms of anxiety come back. And those symptoms are the same as yours. Pain in my chest and arm and my heart beating fast at times. I have seen many docs and they all confirm that there is nothing wrong with me physically, just anxiety. Here is some advice and some things that helped me cope. At your age, the incidence of heart disease is very rare unless you're diabetic or you have a congenital heart defect. If you had a congenital defect, you most likely would have experienced this from an early age and already had a diagnoses. On the other hand, weird **** can happen, so see a doc. It's totally unlikely that there's anything wrong but anxiety, but tell them your symptoms and they will know how to help you, even if you need a small dose of antidepressants. Trust me. The anxiety thing can get nasty if you let it go. Go to the doc and tell them all your concerns. You will probably feel so much better. In the meantime, try to focus on the positive and distract yourself as much as possible. If you can meditate or do yoga or just sit and be quiet and still and take deep breaths, that will help too. Good luck and feel free to email me anytime you like.

Go to the Cardiologist, it is extremley possible at 18 to have heart problems, im 16 years old and i was born with 2 heart problems, and i developed 2 more heart problems later on in life. Im not sure what yours could be, but you should go see a doctor, better yet a cardiologist.

    Good luck

It is certainly possible to have heart problems at any age although they are more common in older people (around 40s +)

Weight and genetics could be a factor, if you have a family history of heart conditions you are more at risk, also if you are overweight or have high cholesterol or if you are not very active you have an increased risk of heart conditions. Smoking does affect your risk of heart attack but the effects are cumulative and don't usually pose a significant risk at such a young age (unless there is a pre-existing condition that the smoking is exasserbating).

The usual symptoms of a heart condition is a burning pain in the centre of a chest that feels like acid reflux (this is becasue the brain's pain centers are overloaded and the pain is confused with simple acid reflux (sometimes called heart burn). The pain is almost alwasy accompanied by a crushing sensation like a weight resting on your chest and a pain in one of your arms.

You say the pain is in your neck and a burning pain at that? Well I'm baffled but I'm fairly confident it isn't anything to do with your heart.

I would chat to the doctor about it to put your mind at ease but I very much doubt it has anything to do with your heart.

Tell your mom one more time that you want to got to the hospital because of how you are feeling, if she says no, you are still having panic attacks tell her fine, and call 911 for an ambulance this will tell your mom that you are serious about going to the hospital.

Many teens die every year from unforeseen heart problems, even those that are in great physical shape, runners, basket ball players, foot ball players all athletes in all fields have a greater risk of dieing, but that doesn't mean someone who is not in to sport wont die. Heart problems are not just for those that that run around any one can have a problem. Fat, skinny, boy, girl, black, white, yellow or brown it doesn't matter, go to the hospital before you die do to a micro valve or some other type valve problem that stops the blood and oxygen from flowing freely throughout your body killing you in the end.

Better safe then sorry, you can always tell your mom " I like roses, so when I die because you thought I was having panic attacks you will know what to put on my grave" then go call for an ambulance, oh yea, you can also call the emergency room and tell them about your issues and they will tell you what to do....

Good luck and I hope you feel better....

    peace....cya....

It is very possible for children around the age of 18 to have heart problems due to arterial blockage. It can be brought on by stress, high cholesterol, and other factors.

When i was in my 17's and 18's i had the same problem.I ignored it and now after completing my study in body science as a physician and sports consultant a came to kno that it was due to heavy exercise and sports training.

If this is the case with u do "pranayam".

its a breathing exercise technique in yoga.
