Search engine question?

When we do the search on the internet we usually type the words and search either for the websites, the articles, or for the pictures. My question is, how do we do the search (on the internet) when what we we have are only pictures. For example, I have a picture of an exotic plant but I do not know the plant's name. Or a picture of a beautiful bird but no one can tell me the name of the bird. A set of beautiful lake pics without where these lakes are located.

Update:

@Jason B: The problem is what if what I wanted to search were the names. What if what I know is just "plant", "bird", or "lake".

Update 3:

I have GREAT difficulty choosing a best answer. Somebody please do it for me. Thanks!

There are websites that you can send photos and images to and they find the answers to them or identify them. You could also put a link to the picture right here on answers and get suprising results if it is in the appropriate categories. Here is an example of one of the sites, but you could probably google more ~

Then you could search for the plant name by searching with a description of what it looks like, such like; exotic plant with purple edges, or bird with orange tipped beak, and then browse through the results and see if you can get a similar picture or name from others through the results.

Hope that helps, if so check out my site

I know exactly what you're trying to do... however, it is currently impractical to implement this sort of image-recognition technology in a search engine used by the general public. It is considerably more difficult, both for programmers and for computers, to match images than it is to match words.

You need to know the names of things, otherwise you will never find what you are looking for. Search engines can't guess for you.
