which sub-genre of heavy metal/rock do you dig the most?
my god, there are so many!
lessee...
Classic Metal (before the genre evolved into many different sub genres e.g Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and later AC/DC)
thrash metal (characterized by fast tempo and agression e.g Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer)
New Wave of British Heavy Metal (the almighty Iron Maiden)
Black Metal (characterized by shrieking vocals e.g. Celtic Frost and numerous Norwegian/Scandfinavian bands)
Death Metal (deep, growling, guttaral vocals and heavily distorted guitars e.g. Cannibal Corpse)
Grunge (characterized by heavily distorted electric guitars, contrasting song dynamics, --quite, loud--and apathetic or angst-filled lyrics e.g Nirvana, Pearl Jam)
Punk Rock (short songs with lots of distortion and anti-establishment lyrics e.g The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Ramones)
Nu Metal ( e.g. System of a Down, Rage Against the Machine, Slipknot.
emerged in the early 90s "combines grunge musicb alternative metal, funk metal, hip hop, and various other heavy metal influences such as industrial, groove and thrash"--from wiki)
phew! and there are dozens more subgenres, but these are more or less the main ones...

My favorite band is Despised Icon, but I don't really like the over-all sub-genre of Deathcore. I wouldn't even categorize them there, but it is what it is.
Thrash Metal has been my favorite for a long time, but I'm kind of growing weary of it at this point. The same ol same ol growling and riffs are getting a little lame to me.
Iron Maiden and Judas Priest are some of my favorite bands, I also love some Metal Church and Accept, so you could say I really like Classic Metal and NWOBHM.
Death, Possessed, Morbid Angel, and the like never get boring or old sounding.
I dig Death Metal the most right now.

I usually lean towards grunge and classic stuff, but in essence it's all mostly great because artists in these genres do possess talent and songwriting ability... unlike our friends in the Top 10 singles charts who get picked up by Disney executives and are told what to do.
