What is the best way to be woken up?
I'm not a morning person, never have been... and I find waking up difficult.
So I have an alarm clock that has a loud and offencive BEEEEEEEP that usually stuns me into wakefulness and scares the hell out of me into waking up enough to get out of bed.
I don't really like waking up this way, and it probably isn't good for you.
Then again, the softly softly approach of a quiet alarm doesn't work either, as it either can be ignored or doesn't wake me up enough to get me out of bed.
My question - what is the best way to be woken up or what method can you use that makes the process less unpleasant?

The best way to wake up is naturally, having had a really good night's sleep.
Therefore the best way to wake up in the morning is to get to bed and drift off to sleep nice and early.
If you have difficulty getting off to sleep that's another question entirely, but here's some tips to getting to sleep early.
Most people who think they have insomnia don't they're just undisciplined in getting to bed, whatever they're doing seems more important to them than going to bed. So tip number one, is simple go to bed, it really helps the sleep process.
Having a regular routine is also important, so your body gets used to going to bed at the same time every day.
This will be enough for most people.
The body relies on visual clues as well as hormonal clues to tell it when it is bed time, day and night cycles are important and some people believe that excessive use of artificial light can interrupt the brain's ability pick up on the naturally diminishing light thus making it more difficult ot drift off to sleep.
The body also relies on a complex array of hormones to regulate sleep. One of these hormones is called adenosine, which builds up during the waking hours and is dissipated during sleep. The more adenosine that builds up the more tired you will feel. The effects of adenosine can be interrupted however by other hormonal influences, such as adrenaline. Adrenaline, sometimes called epinephrine is naturally secreted by the adrenal glands located above the kidneys during periods of stress or anxiety, this is sometimes called the flight or fight mechanism.
Arguments, fights or worries can also interrupt normal sleep patterns. Some forms of entertainment can be so exicting that they stimulate the adrenal glands into producing adrenaline, so this too can sometimes be detrimental to the natural sleep process.
Ideas like drinking warm milk, taking warm baths, reading a boring book or wearing a dark mask and/or earplugs have been found helpful by some people.
In terms of how much sleep you need depends on your age and health, but the natural sleep cycles, sometimes called circadian rythms, is a lot more complex than simply "getting 8 hours sleep". If your sleep patterns are interrupted or occur at the wrong time you might not feel refreshed after sleeping. Hope this is helpful.

If you do not like mornings you probably stay up late go to be early and wake up the same time each day even on weekends for about two weeks and your body will create a natural alarm allowing you to get up at the same time provided that you have been sleeping to at least 6-8 hours

Waking up to music rather than alarm - perhaps also set alarm for a little bit later to make sure you are awake. Regular sleep pattern should also help - bed at same time, ot too late & get up same time.

Drink two glasses of water before bed, works like a charm :D
and also, set your phone on vibrate, so the alarm vibrates....it doesn't scare me in the morning, but its annoying enough to wake me.

get an alarm clock that allows the radio to play as the alarm so you can wake up to music you like or buy an ipod and ipod dock so your own music can wake you up.

Not being facetious but change the conversation you have with yourself about what its like to wake up. If you tell yourself its horrible then it will be.
