If your son needs a nap then you should continue to give him one. Kids need sleep. My daughter is 4 and she still takes a 3 hour nap everyday. She asks for one and when she misses it I can tell later in the afternoon.
Every child is different...my daughter has friends who still nap and some that have not since they were 1 or 2 . You know what is best for him.

If it is not interfering with his bedtime routine, there is no need to simply stop him napping during the afternoon.
My daughter started growing out of them at about 2, but she still had one at least 3 days a week, and gradually reduced them herself. She is now 3 years and 8 months and probably still has an afternoon nap once every 4/5 weeks.

Does he still get tired in the middle of the day? Maybe you could try it out, and if he gets tired before his normal bedtime, he's probably not ready. How long is he napping now? If it's a longer nap, you could always cut it down to an hour nap.

Children tend to stop their naps on their own. Unless you want him in bed earlier and he doesn't need the nap you can stop him. My daughter quit all naps at 18 months and is in bed between 7:30 and 8:00pm

No do not stop naps at three years old!
Your son will be going to all day kindergarten let him take naps until then, while he still can.

My daughter is four and I plan to give her naps until she goes to school. She'll nap anywhere from 2-4 hours per day. She goes down at night around 9pm and wakes up around 7am. Naps around 1pm-4pm

my daughter stopped at about 3. She would just lay down at daycare while everyone napped.

I would think until they go to school and aren't allowed to. However, if he isn't tired and then isn't cranky later then it should be fine for him no to have one. This is usually a good time for you to get stuff done tho.
