What is a repeater and can I use it for the TV?

My boss had DirecTv installed but the box is through a door and he doesnt get a signal to the remote to change the channel. He told me to get a repeater, but I have no idea what this is. Can someone help me with this and what I need to purchase.

    The device is an IR repeater extender. It will have an IR receiver and emitters.
