Why have people forgotten about Kernel?

I am of course referring to the Kernel Memory as it applies to 32bit Operating systems and their inability to Show 4GB of System Memory.

I am not understanding why there are so many mixed reports of what a 32Bit operating system can support. Some say 3.2GB, some say 3.5GB...and then they further suggest that people shouldn't install more than 3.5GB of memory....

When is the last time you were building a system and you actually installed 3.5GB of memory (3x1gb and 1x512mb or 1x2gb, 1x1gb and 1x512mb)?

Update:

@ James. I like the InterWeb...lol...We'll just blame Al Gore...ya know he created the Internet after all... Or Better yet...we'll blame Bill Gates...cause he programs all the Windows Operating Systems!!!...LOL...

I often ask myself the same question. Far too often on YA! do people constantly answer questions stating 'Don't use more than 3 GB of RAM as it is the limit.' or also '64-bit OSes can only use 8GB of RAM.'

One possible cause may be a journalist stating something along the lines of 'The maximum usable amount of RAM on this system is about 3.5GB when you take off the integrated video RAM.' which someone misinterpreted to mean 3.5G max. I have also heard 2.5GB as a limit because of some nonsense excuse.

Even with many articles on and off line correcting this myth, people still chose to believe what they 'think' is right because they heard it on the interweb. :)
