EDIT:After much searching I have found that there is no mention of a writer called Don.A.Schance on the present or past table of reporters and writers, secondly the Los Angeles Times are reknown for false reporting and for defending this when challenged as you will read further on, lastly the times adpoted a `Wiki` style operation so as to gather news from Joe Public to aid in it`s tabloid war on other newspapers, this meant that anyone could contribut snippets of information as is presently done on `Wikipedia`today.
The forcible relocation and internment of approximately 110,000 Japanese nationals and Japanese Americans to "War Relocation Camps" during World War II was enthusiastically supported by the Times, which wrote:[30]
A viper is nonetheless a viper whenever the egg is hatched - so a Japanese American, born of Japanese parents - grows up to be a Japanese, not an American.
In 1988, Congress passed and President Ronald Reagan signed legislation that recognized the deportation and internment as "fundamentally unjust",[31] but the Times never apologized for its attitude towards Japanese Americans during World War II.
The credibility of the Times suffered greatly when it was revealed in 1999 that a revenue-sharing arrangement was in place between the Times and Staples Center in the preparation of a 168-page magazine about the opening of the sports arena. The magazine's editors and writers were not informed of the agreement, which breached the "Chinese wall" that traditionally has separated advertising from journalistic functions at American newspapers. Publisher Mark Willes also had not prevented advertisers from pressuring reporters in other sections of the newspaper to write stories favorable to their point of view.[3
Michael Kinsley was hired as the Opinion and Editorial (Op-Ed) Editor in April 2004 to help improve the quality of the opinion pieces. His role was controversial, as he forced writers to take a more decisive stance on issues. In 2005, he created a Wikitorial, the first Wiki by a major news organization. Although it failed, readers could combine forces to produce their own editorial pieces. He resigned later that year.
On November 12, 2005, new Op-Ed Editor Andrs Martinez shook things up by announcing the firing of leftist op-ed columnist Robert Scheer and conservative editorial cartoonist Michael Ramirez, replacing the two with a more diversified lineup of regular columnists. The change was not well-received by liberal readers, many of whom accused the newspaper of trying to silence liberal voices and remove controversial writers.
The Times has also come under controversy for its decision to drop the weekday edition of the Garfield comic strip in 2005, in favor of a hipper comic strip Brevity, while retaining the Sunday edition. Garfield was dropped altogether shortly thereafter.[33]
Following the GOP's defeat in the 2006 mid-term elections, an Opinion piece published on November 19, 2006, by Joshua Muravchik, a leading neoconservative and a resident scholar at the conservative view American Enterprise Institute, titled BOMB IRAN shocked some readers, with its hawkish overtures in support of more unilateral action by the United States, this time against Iran.[34]
On March 22, 2007, editorial page editor Andrs Martinez resigned following an alleged scandal centering around his girlfriend's professional relationship with a Hollywood producer who had been tapped to guest edit a section in the newspaper.[35] In an open letter penned upon leaving the paper, Martinez blasted the publication for allowing the Chinese Wall between the news and editorial departments to be weakened, accusing news staffers of lobbying the opinion desk.[36]
Also in March 2007 the Times faced rumors that publisher David Hiller suggested and approved former Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld, with whom Hiller has close personal and business contacts, for a guest editorial position at the newspaper.[37] Rumsfeld was an influential Iraq war hawk in the George W. Bush administration. Rumsfeld also has strong ties to the Times' parent company, the Tribune Company, where he was a member of the board of directors.

All I can say is that Pope John Paul II was a great Pope. He lasted 27 years. From 1978-2005.

I do not think that the Pope said it for the following reasons:
+ It is against Catholic doctrine
+ I can find no other source for the quote including the Vatican website with records everything that the Pope writes or says in public.
+ If this was a reliable quote then anti-Catholics would be shoving it down our throats all the time and this is the first time I have heard of it.
With love in Christ.

Strange, the Los Angeles Time are know for having false stories. And you quoted the paper, not Pope John Paul II, and you only included 1/2 of the quote. Not to mention you don't give a link or title to this supposed video no one can find.

Rebutting a belief widely shared by Protestants and a growing number of Roman Catholics, Pope John Paul II on Tuesday dismissed the "widespread idea that one can obtain forgiveness directly from God" and exhorted Catholics to confess more..." [10 May 2009]

Awesome. I think its easier to go to confession then to imagine ourselves oh so connected with God that we are in the clear even with mortal sin.
Try the whole quote.

I'm not a Catholic, but that does not surprise me one bit. This is the same person who allows himself to be revered and practically worshipped by the people. He allows people to bow before him and kiss his 'holy ring' as if he was Jesus. And he calls himself the 'Vicar of Christ'......?? I don't remember that term being in the Bible. John 14:6 says that JESUS is the way, and that scripture does not mention ANYBODY else. So how could the Pope all of a sudden be the 'new' way. Furthermore, Jesus was an active preacher of God's Word. I have never seen the Pope knock on doors of preach the good news of God's Kingdom using the Bible. Does he even have a Bible?? Afterall does he not endorse and/or tolerate Christmas celebrations although it has NO Bible foundation whatsoever?? Just like the Bible says, not all saying, "Lord, Lord" will be acceptable to God.

Of course, this is just a line taken out of an article and without the full article we do not know how it was meant.
That would be like me taking a line out of the old testament and that says an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. What would that mean to you without the full scope of the verses before and after this portion of the bible.
Don't throw out a portion of an article unless you are willing to provide the full article which cannot be accessed without paying for it as it is so OLD and that pope is now deceased.
Source(s): @ Matthew - I went to the Catholic Encyclopedia to read your reference and I did not find your quote anywhere in that reading. For those truly interested in reading.. here is the link http://www.scribd.com/doc/11581724/Cathen-06The-Ca... - 1 decade ago
