Please ignore the prior answers. There are ways to get yourself a quicker first step by doing speed and plyometric drills to develop your fast twitch muscles. There are many different systems available but I believe the Nike Sparq training aids are very well trusted. These training aids will cost a little bit of money but in the end they are worth it. When I started college in 1995 I started doing plyo, parachutes and rubber band training and it did wonders with my 60 yard dash time and range. You will have to commit and do the drills but it will work. I dropped .4 seconds off of my 60 yard dash time in 2 months of doing the plyo drills which is essentially the same thing as Sparq.

Keep your chin up and work hard, you will be quicker.

Range often has less to do with speed and more to do with natural instincts. People with good range react faster to the balls when they are hit, getting a better jump on them than other people. There are couple of things that allows them to do that. Part of it is just having better reflexes and the ability to react immediately to what they see. Also, the good ones watch where the pitch is going and where the matter is lined up to determine at the point of impact where the ball is going to be hit. Essentially a good player with be moving towards the ball before the ball is actually hit. All of the great Major League defenders do this. Now you can train how to do this, but it requires studying hitters to watch how the ball reacts to how they swing and just taking thousands and thousands of groundballs. When I was in high school and college I tried to take a thousand groundballs a week.

Range is more of a natural gift. I originally was a shortstop then converted to third base. The best drill is to steadily practice ground balls hit to your left and right. Simple right? Well it is because you are really working on anticipating where the ball will be hit. You'll also sharpen your reaction time from the point of the ball contacting the bat. Just keep on working hard and good things will happen.

Having great range has less to do w/ speed but more importantly a great first step, good angles to the ball, good footwork and quickness. If I were you I would jumprope alot and do agility drill. On the field take lots of reps to get a better first step and learn how to tak ebetter angles to the ball.
