What are some gift ideas to send to soldiers overseas?

I have a good friend overseas and I want to send him something different for his birthday. He of course wont give me any ideas... I need ideas for things that could be fun AND efficient. Or one or the other. I would love some great ideas for things he can simply enjoy and have fun with... ( I think fireworks when I think fun.. yes I know I cant send that! But I want something just as fun) ... Along with some efficient ideas too.

Update:

by overseas I mean in Afghanistan

Tabasco sauce or any other condiments that they liked when they were home and can not get them where they are now. Pictures of loved ones or pets. Anything that reminds them of home. It's the little things that make one think of home.

Send enough of some of these things for everybody! (We always share everything in the military.)

Socks in normal sizes. They always sell out of normal sizes. A few towels and shower shoes (new, any color) as those wear out after a few months. Magazines that guys actually like to read (Maxim, Popular Mechanic, etc NO PORN.) A couple of Sudoko books.

As far as fun, nothing is funner than squirt guns, especially those awesome pump action ones. Little squeezy stress balls, hacky sacks, and frisbees are nice too. Key-ring sized electronic games like Tetris and Blackjack are good - they're not expensive, so it's no big deal when you drop one in a mud puddle or run it over with the truck. ;)

Don't go overboard on the toiletries and snacks unless he's located at a remote location. We had piles of that sitting around, more than we could use.

It is extremely HOT there and they need to drink lots of water, but the water tastes terrible. Send a couple of plastic quart containers and LOTS of lemonade and Kool-Aid mix.

Do NOT send any spray/aerosal cans - They explode at high temps and it is ILLEGAL to send them.

Do NOT send chocolate - It melts.

Send hard candy, books, CD's, DVD's, etc. Send snack food.

Send lotion and wet wipes - They desperately need them - Again limited water and high temps.

I asked a similar question in the military section and got a great list of ideas to send to my cousin in Afghanistan.

Narrowing it down would help....if he's in the middle east, it's best not to send stuff that will spoil or melt. Depending on his job, it might be awhile before he gets it.

Overseas is a big place...can you narrow it down for us?
