  • Where can I get National Guard award records?

I thought I already posted this. Where might I find records for an award I received in the National Guard? This was for the state of Arkansas and it's an ARCOM (if I remember correctly.) But I do not have the orders and neither does my old unit. I'm completely out of the military now. I have all my Active Duty awards listed on my DD214, but need to get this last one's paper trail in order.

    Thanks.

  • Anybody been to the newest version of Army WLC?

I'm slated for WLC this summer. (I'm National Guard so they'll ship me to a different state for WLC. Going to Wisconsin.)

I hear that the APFT and Land Nav are out, and Drill and Ceremony and three written exams and "Army Writing" are in. They're also supposedly teaching "Physical Readiness Training" instead of standard PT. Should be interesting:

Has anybody been through the new version? Can you confirm that the above is true? Any advice?

    Thanks.

  • Does anybody take an Embry Riddle "Worldwide" degree seriously?

They've got "satellite campuses" on a lot of Navy and Air Force bases, including one near my town. I'm looking at their Master's program for Aeronautics. I'm aware that like many satellite campuses, there's probably a low percentage of actual professors vs instructors.

But my undergrad GPA isn't that great (2.8) and I'm looking to use my GI Bill close to home. There's just not a lot of universities offering a Master's Degree in my state!

Embry Riddle's signed up for the Yellow Ribbon Program so it will be next to free for me. Just wondering if it would be worth using up half my GI Bill on their program. They seem more legit than, say University of Phoenix, since they do actually have real campuses and their real campus programs ARE fairly respectable.

  • Does iPerms actually ever work?

Been trying to download enlistment contract for a couple of days now. Has it just been down for a couple of days??

I tried downloading it with DownThemAll and dTAOneClick! but that just gives me the first page of each of the documents in my files - so I have page 1 of my enlistment contract only.

I'm thinking it might be easier to go find my original copy in storage. ;)

  • Why don't we have maternity leave in the U.S.?

Other Western countries have up to a year of maternity leave, with up to 4 months of it paid leave.

We get 12 weeks of unpaid leave for family emergencies, adoption, or caring for a newborn.

    That's it.

  • What's the best Arabic language program in Yemen?

I'm looking to study Arabic abroad. I have taken six semesters of college level Arabic, but it's been a year or two since I've studied it. I'm a little rusty.

There are a dozen different schools in Yemen offering Arabic instruction. Which ones are accredited by Yemen's government or a university?

I am interested in studying in an inexpensive program in a country where the local dialect is not too far off from standard Arabic. For this reason, I don't want to study in Egypt or Morocco.

  • How do I move move money from one account to another?

I recently left the Army. I moved to a different state and set up a bank account here. How can I move most of the money from my old account to my new account here where I now live?

  • Changing the officer system?

This question is more directed at those in the military or very familiar with the military.

What do you think about eliminating the system we have where people with no military experience can enter the service as officers?

I know that starting out as Lieutenant or Ensign gives you a chance to learn, but the fact is, some people have an aptitude for the job, and some don't. You can learn leadership, but I think it might be better if everyone came in as enlisted. Those with potential could be given a shot at OCS or even a shortened version of the service academies (I can't foresee eliminating those academies!) Israel has a system like this.

I have a degree. I enlisted, because I had college loans paid back. I also doubted I had the aptitude to be an Army officer. I think I could do it, but I don't think I'd be very good at it. I can manage tasks, and I get along very well with people in leadership positions. But I have trouble managing people. Some of it is a confidence problem, and some of it is an honest competence problem. I could be better at it than some of the officers I've served with... but that's not saying a lot, in the end.

I know. It would be next to impossible to dismantle the system as it is. Tradition rules in the military. (Else I probably wouldn't have joined - it's family tradition.)

  • What's a good way to control mosquitos?

I don't want the dog exposed to dangerous chemicals on the ground. We can use insect repellent on ourselves, but what about the dog? What about sitting outside without smelling like bug spray? :)

The mosquitoes are breeding somewhere off our rental property, as every I've looked is dry, no standing water.

Bug zappers look cool, but we do not have external power. Do they make a noticeable difference in mosquito control? I've seen solar ones as well, but the small solar torches we bought for lighting purposes only lasted a month or so.

Thanks on behalf of a mosquito-bitten family and dog...

  • OFFICER Recruiting only?

I'm thinking about applying for Direct Commission, probably Navy Reserve, but maybe Army Psyops. My degree was in linguistics, and I have four years operational military intelligence and targeting experience.

I served six years, enlisted, on Active Duty, including two tours (27 months total) in Iraq. I am now a drilling member of the National Guard. I have some breathing issues (shortness of breath and persistent cough) dating back to my time in Iraq. We were located right next to an oil refinery and also had the usual trash burning pits and sand storms. I have documentation in my medical records as to what we were exposed to and how much. So far, all that has been determined is that it's not reactive asthma (basic pulmonary function test normal.)

I'm still going through the process at the VA to diagnose and treat the problem. I also have sinus tachycardia (EKG normal/regular, no physical abnormality from Echocardiogram), which I also attribute to service in the Middle East.

I do not take meds for any of the above, and while they have slowed down my PT tests, I still pass them.

If the VA determines these things are combat-related, will I still not be able to pass the MEPS physical for officer accession? Or are there no or limited exceptions for combat service related health issues?

  • What are some respected Urban Planning programs in the U.S.?

I'm looking to do some graduate studies using the new GI Bill. I left the Army six months ago. My background included working with ArcGIS. I'm taking a graduate certificate course in that at a local state university.

What are some of the most respected U.S. programs for Urban Planning? I am specifically interested in alternative transportation and walkable/bike-able scale development. Not so much highways and suburbs.

  • Can full-time caregivers get health insurance?

My uncle is thinking about quitting work to take care of my grandmother (his mother) full-time. She is diabetic, blind, and unable to walk more than a few feet a couple of times a day. He's been working full time and caring for her full time. As she gets worse, it's getting to be too much. He can take 12 weeks of Family And Medical Leave, unpaid. But would he be covered by his employer's health insurance during this time?

If he quits his job entirely, can he get coverage from any other resources?

She has a small annuity, some savings, and Medicare coverage, so it's not her living costs we are worried about, but my uncle's health care coverage.

We try to pitch in and help as much as we can. But it's a full-time job (and then some) to be a caregiver. What can we do?

    We live in Arkansas.
