Tennis balls for dogs?
I have heard that tennis balls are bad for dogs teeth. Has anyone else heard this? I was told it was the felt on the ball that wore down the dogs teeth and it wasn't good for them to have the tennis ball. What have you heard about using tennis balls for dog toys? Should I let my dog play with them? Or not?
This says the glue on tennis balls is bad
For little dogs I would use the racket balls. They don't have any glue or felt to wear down the teeth. I use tennis balls for fetch too, but in a very limited manner.

My beagle has been playing with tennis balls since the day we brought him home. His teeth are fine.
I have never heard this before. Do you have a resource link?
Oh I see. Chewing on tennis balls.
I do not allow my dogs to chew or rip apart the tennis balls. Just play fetch.

As far as I know they are fine for dogs my dog is mad for any sort of ball when ever we go for a walk she will always grab her tennis ball and will carry it every where with her
if you are worried about tennis balls try a different type of ball with the dog there are lots of dog friendly balls out there

I have a Rat Terrier and he is 11 years old. he has always played with tennis balls even when he was to small to pick them up. We shave them if they get fuzzy and throw them away when the insides start to crack (you can tell they get soft spots) Don't buy the cheap ones in the dog isle or the ones at dollar stores. They won't last long. Regular tennis balls from the sports isle are the best.
thanks for the information - but with out a tennis ball my rat terrier would go crazy - he loves to play fetch - he can play forever and in the house a tennis ball is not to bad.

If you question the safety of regular tennis balls, buy the ones at the pet store made for dogs. All i know is my dog loves them and has shown no sign for any harm from them. Actually he destroys the toys from the pet store and will eat small parts from those, but not a whole tennis ball.

Hello,
This is true! I still use tennis balls for fetch, but fetch ONLY. I take them away right when my dog tries to chew on them. You should buy a different type of ball for your dog.
Enjoy!

All my dogs have had tennis ball... not so much my boy now as they are in bits with in 5 minutes, but all my dogs teeth have been perfectly fine with tennis ball, never ever had a dental problem with my dogs.
I say let them play with them.

I have never heard of this and since we brought my dog home he has been playing with a tenis ball, and acually just this week we took him into the vet for his check up and they didnt say anything about his teeth, so i guess it's ok.

Yes I think my vet or trainer told me about that. I still use them, but just every once in a while. I really only use them to play games with and for training I don't let them chew it all up. However they don't last very long with my bullies. I think they are ok as long as they don't play with them constantly or it may where the teeth down. Hope this helps, good luck!

I heard that as well, but I have no "proof" that it's true.
For me, tennis balls are outside "fetch" toys only - not because of the risk, but because if Kip chews on them, they last approximately 4.795 minutes.
