using household bleach in pool?

my 'expert' says, no, it has stuff in it that causes turbulence. I say, in a pinch, just use twice as much bleach, since it is just half strength pool 'chlorine' Why is he right?

Update:

yes, I know the strength. My expert says that household bleach will cause precipitation and turbulence in my pool. He says the reason I have precipitation and turbulence is because I try to maintain the 1-3 ppm chlorine level by using bleach. They are supposed to be chemically the same (according to the label), 6% for the household bleach, 10% for the 'pool' chlorine. But, the man swears that I am causing the turbulence by using 6% sodium hypochlorite bleach.

    If you use plain sodium hypochlorite bleach without additives such as fragrance, it is the same as pool chlorine except for the strength.

    Folks often think bleach is cheaper than pool chlorine and it may be if you express your cost in terms of the amount of chlorine you are actually buying then adjust the dose to compensate for the difference in strength. Get a good test kit and prove it yourself!

    A lot of pool guys are only repeating what they have heard and not quoting from their experience such as the guy from texas, above! There are more chlorine choices available than the constant use of Calhypo!

    I would ask your "expert" what would the precipitate be? The turbulence, I think he means turbidity since pools can always use turbulence to better help mix it up!

    You're welcome!!

    Yes you can use household chlorine bleach in a swimming pool. It has the same sodium hypochlorite as pool chlorine. However, it has such a small amount, 3 to 6 percent, that it would take a lot more than twice as much. You would need to add gallons and gallons and it would be very difficult, if not impossible, to regulate the levels. From that standpoint it isn't very practical.

    Chlorine is chlorine. There are many people who chlorinate their pools with regular household bleach. Buying "pool chlorine" often means you're also adding fillers and other chemicals which can cause issues over time, and will require purchase of additional chemicals to fix the problems.
