Sticks 'n stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me?
Really? I'm not sure 'bout that. What do you think?
So... it's not just if you drop Mirriam Webster's on your foot and break a toe?
The consensus seems to be that words (like I hate you) can potentially hurt you.
I wonder, "Has anyone here ever been hit with a stone?" It's got to hurt. I'm not sure one is necessarily worse than the other.

i agree bruises can heal. and words do take longer in some cases. in fact in some situations words can kill. ive seen it happen. personally i don't think this saying is very accurate. where as there are people out there that this saying may apply to. they might feel confident about who they are and words really cant hurt them more than bruises and broken bones.

It is certainly not true. Words can cut deeper than any knife. The little rhyme has been taught to children for generations to help them rise above unkind words of their peers. Even though it is not entirely true, it is a helpful "crutch" for youngsters and I would not hesitate to teach it to a child too young to understand and employ more sophisticated tools for rising above the slurs of non-thinkers around her.

That isn't true. Words can stay with someone for longer, and bruises can heal.

the soldier lie dieing
slow was mercy to find
rights he knew, dismissed
he did as told, as trained
they must die
words he heard
they are wrong
words he heard
they will kill
words he heard
they were just words, yet....
the soldier lie dieing
from just words

The healing process for mental abuse can be instant.
Or it may take years.
So the IDEA that they may not hurt you can be correct.
