USB 16GB thumb drive will only take 4GB?
The drive formats fine and shows 16 GB but using backup it stops when it gets to 4GB and says tape full.
OK so is need NTFS, I tried to format but NTFS is not a option. It shows 16 GB when I do properties but I can only load up 4GB before it chokes. I guess I will have to part into 4 pieces.

Are you sure the backup program isn't limited to a 4 GB file size? 4GB happens to be the numeric limit for a 32-bit number. The program may not have taken larger files into account. This has been a cyclical problem throughout PC history as storage got bigger and bigger.
Hope that helps.

The file system is formatted using FAT32 which only allows info to be saved in 4GB increments to fix this reformat it using NTFS or can a utility called 7zip and you can try compressing it to a size smaller than 4GB or compress it and split it into smaller volumes.

the answer to your question is probably in one of the other people's answers HOWEVER, if you bought the thumb drive off ebay it might be that its only a 4gb drive and that the people that sold it to you flashed it as 16gb....
